I have a 15" macbook pro with the glossy display, 2.2ghz intel processor, 2gb ram, 160 gb hdd, dvd-r, firewire, usb 2.0 and this puppy runs circles around my pc - simply because the workflow is that much better. As for software... OSX is suprisingly abundant with everyday productivity software... for more serious needs you should look to the apple library of software, although you can find most anything third-party too.
