I think it has more to do with not being told what to do.
He left the old office to start his own - to build something of his own - and he doesn't want to DO what Roger and Pete tell him to do anymore.- But he shouldn't have to be told by Roger that he needs to sell himself. he should know that.mtgentry

"Roger is a racist .. wasn't expecting that."
Yeah, I think this is a huge oversimplification just calling Rodger a racist. His situation is a little more complex than just hating a race of people because of their ethnicity.I forget, how many people of non-japanese origin does Japan have working in their government? Oh, that's right, zero.

Why can't they just sort it out!!!?

OK, so maybe Don's drink wasn't spiked- maybe it was indeed sun stroke. I mistakenly thought the glass he was inspecting at the end of the show, while in the pool, had residue on it. Actually the glass had a hairline crack in it.
The 2 faces of Don/Dick? Trouble in nomad land? Time for pyrex glassware?

- I thought it was great that he kicked the prospective clients out of the office. That needs to happen more often.instrmntl
- I was kinda on the client's side, the idea Don pitched was off-brandmtgentry
- True but an agencies goal was to sell more product, and there simply wasn't a way to beat competitors without owning up to what their product really is, scantily clad swimsuits.instrmntl

at the end he puts his arm up on the left side instead or right, as we are used to seeing.

I love the way that Pete can show such total disgust and judgement in a second with his facial expressions. It's one of my favorite parts of the show. He's also got a way of carrying himself and talking that's very proper and British without the accent. Maybe an East Coast boarding school upbringing and some pretentiousness/elitism.
I couldn't believe he didn't give up Don. Maybe he will - my prediction is that the season ends losing Lucky Strike and Pete realizes that the defense client would have saved them; he'll reveal that Don made him dump it in a rage in the partners meeting. I bet that's exactly how the season ends, with Don realizing his secret is finally out to the people who brought him to where he is - Roger and Burt - and they see the cost of his secrets.
- omg .. waiting for season 5 is going to be hell.lukus_W
- Burt already knows. Like I said, they are dead without him... and so is the show lolsofakingbanned
- Cooper has always known. Draper and him talk about it wayy back, season two, I think.jasonistaken

@Mr_right;
No .. you're wrong. He is a racist.
"His situation is a little more complex than just hating a race of people because of their ethnicity."
_EVERY_ racist can and _would_ use this argument to validate their point of view. No one hates another person's race simply because they don't like the colour of that person's skin. There are always justifications and prejudices which underlie the hatred or disdain. Racism is complex - but the behaviour can be easily classified.
If a person generalises and presupposes a person's characteristics based upon to their race, they are also - by definition - a racist. Roger fits this definition.
To be frank, it sounds like you're making excuses for your own world-view. The possibility that Japan doesn't employ foreign nationals in its government, means nothing. Even if this was true, it would not excuse someone who is exhibiting racial prejudice. It's another example of a gross generalisation.
I was surprised by Roger's racist outburst, because I find his character generally quite decent and charismatic. At the end of the day, it's clever writing and probably quite true to life. His character is expressing a view that was obviously quite common at the time.
A similar view in modern times would be much less understandable - and far more abhorrent.

I like how they drop in aspects of 60s counterculture even if the characters on the show don't experience much of it - it's like a separate world for them.

I would say Pete Campbell would quit, but I don't see how SDCP would survive with him leaving, thus, leaving no plot for the show... (or a very drastic change...) so who knows. What you all think about that situation?

when?
