I think it's looking bloody great now. Any applications of the logo / brand that I have recently have been really exciting. It's fresh, its unique, its different, they took a chance, they didn't go with the usual safe shit and I think it's paid off now...
It was ridiculed at first but I think people have slowly began to see what wolff olins have tried to do. We will look back at this in years and I think it will be a turning point in branding! The emphasis is no longer on creating a mark that looks polished, smart, corporate... designed. It's more about what lies behind the logo, the people, the games, the energy.
They call it 'everyone's olympics', and i think they've succeded in creating a brand that is inlcusive and approachable by everyone, not just another safe, boring, but well constructed, corporate logo.

"It's more about what lies behind the logo, the people, the games, the energy."
What is it about this logo that does that, as opposed to every other logo?
I guess it's hard for me to look at it neutrally now, after all the shit it's taken in the press and from designers.

because it's so crudely put together, it seems like a logo anybody could have created! when of course, it's been meticulously pieced together. I think this gives the logo something not many other identities have. It's so much more about the content when you see applications....

I love how Wolff Olins needs to validate and explain why their identity is meaningful, all inclusive, diverse and open minded. It only takes a New York minute to realize that the identity they created blows and is a complete failure on all levels, period.

I still think it's a complete failure. Why? Because in my experience it's a perfect example of design by committee, and a perfect illustration of why designers should be trusted to do their job. It's utterly aimless and in no way, which ever way I look at it, does it say anything about the city in which I live.
Just look at it and honestly tell me you can't see Sebastian Coe and his cronies sticking their orb in, believing that they know best. That is what this logo represents.

All most of you mention is logo logo logo - when you see how flexible the branding as a whole is, and how much energy and vitality it conveys you surely have to appreciate that the bigger picture works very well. While the Beijing logo may look more elegant and polished as a logo, I haven't seen anything other than a logo stamped on everything with literally ZERO sense of brand. And that is in China where as you m ay expect, they have a lot of coverage.
