My experience as a designer max - not of this project personally.

And Seb Coe. He's got "client knows best" written all over him. His defense of it all was typical. I've spent years dealing with people like him.

I think it's a more abstract representation of London - young, vibrant, fashionable, progressive.
I'd have hated to have seen tired images of tower bridge or the river.
They've obviously catered to the youth as their primary audience and they would obviously have tested this in many focus groups, perhaps 30 something designers/coders aren't their main concern.
Don't get me wrong I think there are aspects of the logo that are shoddy, but generally I think the vibe and flexibility are great, whether they stand the test of time is a genuine concern, but if you want cutting edge 5 years in advance, your treading on thin ice.
I commend their braveness, that's my 2 olde pennies.

As a brand it works perfectly, is extremely recognizable and unique, and it's extremely versatile in all the applications. It can work virtually in every context application which is a ultrabig plus for a brand.
It's visually horrific, that for sure
But it's not the point.
Everything else about this logo/corporate image is hot air.

It was hilarious when I was in China recently, considering how precious the olympic committee are when it comes to who can and can't use their identity, how they use it and cracking down on counterfitters etc, and then I saw in the front of a t-shirt shop on a main street a girl hand painting the logo onto a t-shirt... just gutted I didn't have my camera handy.

^^ exactly, I image being handed the brand guidelines to work on something would actually be really inspiring and great to work with, rather than the usual don't do this, clear space must be this, bottom left corner only bollocks that you have to fight against. And just look how seamlessly the logo fits into partner/affiliate branding.
It really surprises me how many young designers here seem so outraged and are seemingly incapable of seeing possibilities, yet incapable of any further articulation than "its fucking shit" etc
aah well what do I know

It's a nice idea, I just think it's been poorly executed (much like the Olympics).
Changing the subject somewhat, for a global event, I'm looking forward to the day that a single country is not lumbered with the responsibility of such an event. I think they should sack this format and have all countries of the world bid for different events. It would ease pressure on host countries and make it something truly global.

indeed moth, it's like having the family invite themselves over for christmas dinner while only offering to bring the dinner rolls...

the 0 still look like Australia though and don't understand the hyphen in the middle of it all????

It would also let poorer countries take part. Take bidding for archery or something - you'd hope that wouldn't cost £12bn.
