erm. i guess if pigs made honey it *wouldn't* be kosher. but you can have kosher honey, and, more importantly, kosher bit o honey:

    Tea: Halal

(Please note that Halal status is based on absence of any processing aid ingredients or hidden ingredients. Food products in European countries may contain up to 20% undeclared food ingredients. But laws are changing at the end of this year to declare all the ingredients in a food product. The Mushbooh food products have to be under "Suitable for vegetarian" label but without alcohol in flavors and without use of alcohol in spice extraction. The Halal status of McDonald's UK products are based on the ingredients list provided by McDonald on their British web site.

To be honest, I think we should be looking into the possibility that pigs *do* make honey, and how that would effect just about every simple truth we cling to in life. wild.

it's an interesting debate, though, the matter of honey being kosher. you can't eat bees, but you can eat honey. normally, if something comes from something that isn't kosher, then that thing isn't kosher. honey from bees is the exception that proves the rule.

i think mostly because a) it's awesome and b) you can make the argument that the bees do not 'produce' the honey but merely 'store' it. but that smacks of postrationalisation to me.

Simple fact is, pigs taste very very good. Honey also tastes good. Pig and honey = lovely. So if they could make honey from pigs, I'd probably be camping outside the shop waiting for it to go on sale.

man, this is complicated; religion and snacking should always be kept seperate imo, isn't that why we had an enlightenment.

I'm going to devote my life to finding proof of pig-honey btw

i read somewhere that the concept of "kosher" (i guess halal is basically the same thing) is based on ancient crude understanding of nature.

the priests believed that there was a force of chaos in nature, opposite to god´s given order.

all creatures/substances that did not fit their primitive understanding of nature were considered to be chaotic and therefore avoided.

it basically goes like this: fish live in the sea. if it´s living in the sea, and doesn´t not look like a fish, it must be against god´s order, so they don´t eat crabs.

or the carnivore and herbivore thing. if an animal does both, it´s against god´s order, so they don´t eat pigs (which were omnivore wild boars back then).

so it´s obviously hard these days to follow their original concept.

i though kosher originated from guidelines that would help you avoid food poisoning.

thought so too, but apparently it´s spiritual for the main part. or so this book on jewish culture said. i find it surprising that there never have been updates of the rules. they´re so proto, like way before 2000BC.
