i read somewhere that the concept of "kosher" (i guess halal is basically the same thing) is based on ancient crude understanding of nature.
the priests believed that there was a force of chaos in nature, opposite to god´s given order.
all creatures/substances that did not fit their primitive understanding of nature were considered to be chaotic and therefore avoided.
it basically goes like this: fish live in the sea. if it´s living in the sea, and doesn´t not look like a fish, it must be against god´s order, so they don´t eat crabs.
or the carnivore and herbivore thing. if an animal does both, it´s against god´s order, so they don´t eat pigs (which were omnivore wild boars back then).
so it´s obviously hard these days to follow their original concept.
