you could become a creative recruiter and take a break for a bit.

I'm in the same boat. I just started a few personal projects and cut back on my freelance load, it really helps to make time for yourself. I've thought about the MBA also but I had a teacher in design school that used to tell me to "make it easy to follow, so easy that even an MBA could get it."

I have been kicking around the idea of going back to school as well. Have been thinking about going to Full Sail for Audio Engineering / Producing.

I'm 32. Freelancing for the past year and a half and doing quite well. I do think about starting a business - I did it before so I'm familiar with what hoops need jumping through. But I think an MBA would give me a skill set that would allow me to run a better business.
All in all I want to be of more service. Designer go around convincing everyone how important their job is. You know, shaping cultural identity, design s authorship, etc. And there is some truth to that but I guess I long for a more direct connection.
I cooked in restaurants to put myself through school. Thought about going to cooking school.

MBA - the general knowledge is super useful. I've been running a business for about 5 years now, but wish I would have finished my MBA (2 degrees in arch and a minor in biz seemed like plenty!..plenty of debt too) and have considered going back many times.
Sure, you learn by fire running your own show, but as things become more complex and you are juggling budgets, payment, marketing, etc., it becomes more stressful and you waste time with inefficiencies.
I need a bookkeeper, too ;-)

Only start a design business if your heart is really in it. My issue with starting creating a design firm is the scalability factor. You can only make as much as you work. Whereas if you designed a cool widget you could make much more $.

+1 on becoming a plumber. (or a tradesman of any type)
Piss easy to get the basic skills required, you can charge a similar rate to what you're doing at the moment and the best bit is that you can be totally shit at your job and still get repeat business because your trade is in demand.

- I meet an old school friend last month, he trained as a plumier 15 years ago, he is now pulling in 80K+ a year. I did not say what I was making. :|
I also meet another mate who started a cab company, only him at the time, he know has a fleet of cars, and is on his way to buy a fucking Lambo.
Shit.roundabout - you dont have a toilet where you work Spooky?ian00

Use your design skills for something constructive. Start a porn site and watch the dollars flow in.
- I am laughing at this, but PORN is big business.roundabout

MBA is a good way but dont expect a career change. Most of finance jobs require you to have finance background and experience. And if you go banking you will be competiting associate jobs with 20 year olds.
best thing to do is get an MBA and combine that with your creative side. You will be more valuable since you can think both strategically and creatively. Thats something that does come by often. Using that you can be a managing creative director or managing director. Imagine a business guy who understand creative, thats someone you want to work for.
I have management consulting background and I am not afraid to crack open an excel and make a model. The analytical skill that you will learn will help you in your creative ways.
If you are curious, pick up Porter's books.

This book is a must. Take a read and it might inspire you.I wish you luck. I really hate creatives snobs who cant stand the idea some doing something thats high level. I mean thats what you will be doing when you are a creative director.
Go for it. You might love it.
