I was thinking about doing a Masters in something but I think I want to get into the work field right away. While I don't mind school, it's more stressful than work is, imo. I know uni is supposed to be a fun time but I had to do so much work over these past 4 years. Anyway, I think I will take some more courses in my spare time while working later. Something to do with random web stuff.
- if you are leaning towards masters, do it now, while you are in the school groove.. seriouslyBonSeff
- I know, I know. But I think I'm over the school thing for now. At least going full-time.Jaline
- I'm sure there will be a "told you so" moment between us in the future...Jaline
- nah, you have ambition- that trumps my hind sight advice.. but from experience, my advice is keep after itBonSeff

I was a designertoo, got sick of it so switched to illustration, now I'm getting a bit sick of that too, so I am thinking of a change. I have one client who I would die to work for. I just asked them now, in half jest half seriousness, if I could go and work for them and they (he) said "Its a possibility, you'd be very good here actually"
I tell you what, if they offered me anything, I'd bite their hands off accepting and be happy to provide happy finishes for everyone every Friday. Studiospooky would be cobwebbed until a future date and I would buy a phenomenally awesome car to commute in.

make art for creativity sake.
write.
drink a bottle of champagne.there is many options. quit your job for a few weeks and get a better headspace is a good one. i think true artist/designer will always be artiste/designer.
- perhaps i am realizing that I am not "true" designer. I like it. I'm pretty good at it. Just not passionate about itian00
- are you driven to be creative? if the answer is yes... you know.antigirl
- tis is exactly the route i am taking. as long as you do good work you will find a way to survive, job or not.cannonball

Be a plumber. Make your own schedule and there are never enough of you around.
- My Uncle is a union plumber and makes $35/hr plus a VERY comprehensive benefits package.epigraph
- you can easily make $35+ as a designer without actually working with shit, oh there will be shitty projects but not other people feces.fooler
- $35/hour is supposed to be good? shit my rate is £60hrMojo
- To far all day, be late every time, and to genuinely be lazy...it's a great amount. There's always jobs.yaphi

seriously if you have a few quid/dollars go travelling for at least 3 months. I took a 10 month break around south east asia and australia, oh and funded my Oz excursions by freelancing on interactive projects in melbourne and sydney. See the world before you get old and wrinkley.

At least in the US, I have a hard time considering higher education a wise route to a career change. Saddling yourself with all that debt seems like a bad start. That is assuming you aren't trying to move into a profession that has specific education requirements.
Ask yourself are you looking for a job? Or are you looking to carve your own path? Jobs like degrees. Those making things up as they go along can find that knowledge on their own.

Career changes never work. Look what happened when Michael Jordan tried to play baseball. Or when Jeffrey Archer tried to become a politician. Or when Bill Gates tried to become a gentleman.
Every day I see tired old designers lined up at the Salvation Army, waiting for their handout of soup and used clothes. Just keep your nose to the grindstone, learn to keep your thoughts from wandering, and move up whatever ladder is in front of you.
- what about when david bowie became an actor and nick cave wrote novels and... tyra banks hosted telly?vespa
- johnny cash used to work for the air force decoding Russian communications...vespa

Id say go for it. Ive worked for 7 years in fashion and design, now Im studying horology in the hopes of making handmade watches and to do antique watch and clock restoration for museums and private collectors. Studies = broke as hell. But Ive never been happier and more complete.
- that's so cool. i think it's all about finding your niche.tkmeister

I meet an old school freand last month, he trained as a plumer 15 years ago, he is now pulling in 80K+.
- Hey, you can too if you pull your thumb out - it's all about the hours and the effort.detritus
- Sorry but you will never make that sort of money in graphic design, unless you start a company.roundabout

I'm getting my commercial license right now. I have fantasy of hanging up this life at some point & flying charter flights out of Miami to the islands. Designing, drawing & painting on my own terms.
it'll happen...you'll see...you'll all see.

lol @ MBA
"Gee I'm so tired of being creative all day long, lemme go open up Excel and crunch numbers"
right.
- seems like a shallow take on MBAs. Perhaps you are right though.ian00
- nothing personal, but i for one, will never understand the point of an MBA. easily the dumbest thing to do in higher ed.madirish
