deadline: 14hrs"this is a really nice shot, but can you (with the computer) turn the boy around so he's running toward the camera instead of away from it?"

I've had some dickhead creative director use the term "it doesn't make me feel uncomfortable" because he wanted an "edgy look and feel"
- tell him to lay on the floor, and start kicking him. hows that feeling. lol. edgy enough.akrokdesign

u know the funny thing is that all those comments are correct. it's just that theyc ome in some coroprate BS meeting or from some corporate idiot or whatever so obviously you are offended.
I mean in my business i hear/say those comments all the time -- it's just they are either way less offesive because the environmnet is more chill or simply throug simple reasononing i tell the people why it's the best solution and their way just sucks.

"I often wonder how it is that the majority of people/clients out there can be completley illogical about creative work and have the worst taste imaginably. I mean, are designers and other creatives that much in the minority? And if so is it possible that WE are the ones that are illogical and have bad taste? Hmmmmm... I need a beer."

Nope. I do believe we are more aware of trends, and know to a certain extent what looks good. We are trained professionals in a specific field where we deal with things clients and people in general can't think of, like type and worrying about kerning, tracking, widows, x-heights, making sure the appropriate typeface for a job is used while worrying about how it will respond to a particular point size on an specific paper stock for example...or make sure things will print accurately every time, as people think we just press the "print" button to print 10,000 booklet.
One of the reasons we all have problems with clients is that every single human being think he/she is creative because they drew in kindergarten or their mommy told them they were as they were growing up. People won't take it personally if you tell them they know nothing about medicine or accounting or writing music, but when it gets to telling them they lack knowledge to being creative and knowing about communication design they take it as an insult. This leads to forcing themselves to believe they are creative and can art direct.
Another thing is that people change their personal views on anything as soon as any design work is done to their business because they get scard and nervous. You can almost see them mutate into monsters with bad taste in the first meeting where concepts are presented. First, as people, they have a slight appreciation for stuff they looks clean, with good colours, normal sized logos and content very well prioritized. But, when the design is done for their businesses their insecurities show up and drives them to ask for huge logos, serifs or scripty fonts and bigger text thinking that will actually help.
Clients panic and think they are creative too coz their mommies told them that as kids, period.

I've had a client ask me to photoshop a black man so he looks more white. I told him NO!

It's perfect, we just need to make a few changes...

This is something we get a lot at work.
us: so regarding the aesthetics,...we think... (interrupted by client)
client: ...just make funky, you know..., like kinda cool looking.
us: ok, but tell us your idea of what "funky" is to you and your particular audience. Or show us some material with that style.
client: well, you know...sexy. s-e-x-y. something that when people see it they like boom! whoa! that's funky!
us: ok, but everybody has a very different idea of what funky, sexy or cool is. Help us out a bit. Describe what you mean with "sexy" and "funky". We can't just try to guess what you want during the process. We can work with the trends and your overall audience's likes and dislikes. But we need you to be a bit more descriptive with what you know about you and your audience.
client: umm...ok sure, By sexy i mean "some thing radical", something that makes you wanna get out fo the couch go like "whoa!", that's sweet!!!
us: (some just stare at the clients in shock and other's look at each other and communicate with telephaty about how horrendous the next couple of weeks will be working the clients as there will be endless revisions and won't make the deadline.
