"I often wonder how it is that the majority of people/clients out there can be completley illogical about creative work and have the worst taste imaginably. I mean, are designers and other creatives that much in the minority? And if so is it possible that WE are the ones that are illogical and have bad taste? Hmmmmm... I need a beer."

Nope. I do believe we are more aware of trends, and know to a certain extent what looks good. We are trained professionals in a specific field where we deal with things clients and people in general can't think of, like type and worrying about kerning, tracking, widows, x-heights, making sure the appropriate typeface for a job is used while worrying about how it will respond to a particular point size on an specific paper stock for example...or make sure things will print accurately every time, as people think we just press the "print" button to print 10,000 booklet.

One of the reasons we all have problems with clients is that every single human being think he/she is creative because they drew in kindergarten or their mommy told them they were as they were growing up. People won't take it personally if you tell them they know nothing about medicine or accounting or writing music, but when it gets to telling them they lack knowledge to being creative and knowing about communication design they take it as an insult. This leads to forcing themselves to believe they are creative and can art direct.

Another thing is that people change their personal views on anything as soon as any design work is done to their business because they get scard and nervous. You can almost see them mutate into monsters with bad taste in the first meeting where concepts are presented. First, as people, they have a slight appreciation for stuff they looks clean, with good colours, normal sized logos and content very well prioritized. But, when the design is done for their businesses their insecurities show up and drives them to ask for huge logos, serifs or scripty fonts and bigger text thinking that will actually help.

Clients panic and think they are creative too coz their mommies told them that as kids, period.
