"feminine component of style"
Is goes beyond the obvious use of pink, flourishes, and cutsie styles that many women use in their design. It's is often the tracking, kerning, use of negative space, forms and shapes, etc... and even the creative process that makes it difficult for woman to have a distinctive voice in the design world which is dominated by men, unfortunately. In my humble opinion I have a much greater respect for women designers when you do not even know that a woman designed a great design, and know one questions it's authenticity.Paula Scher as an example. Although I do not like some of her work, she refrains herself from interjecting her femimine into her work unless it is absolutely imperative.

Hmm...I'm not so sure what the problem is with "interjecting femininity", as you say. What about masculinity? Many people have their own style, and it doesn't have to be categorized.

can't we all just get along

I agree, many men and probably me at times have masculine characteristics embedded into the overall design. Well for me, I try to step outside my natural tendencies and try to infuse character, style, function and form that will help elevate the design and give it a larger mass appeal.

By the way, you bring up some interesting points, utopian. I am currently viewing a lecture about religion (death and afterlife), so I'm fed up with "deeper meanings", heh.
