I pretty much agree except I would add that a huge percentage of artists and the "art world" are also huckster/hype/merchandisers

surely working with faceless corporations is the reason why you would work in branding...
you know - to give them a face..
no?
- wunderbra0
I design for faceless and profitering corporations and I am proud of it. I call it art,

johannes, this is true, but art extends to entertainment, to music videos, to illustrators, to all sorts of forms not normally considered traditional art.
Personally I find The Sopranos to be a work of art...a very long, good book, brought to life through motion and sound.

it's funny that so many people believe or say they do this profession to change the world... that's not to say that it can indeed help change the world. for better or for worse. There's always two sides to the story and as has been mentioned by you and others, some are in it to try and change the status quo and others are just doing what they enjoy doing wether it be giving to a faceless multinational firm or a nonprofit that helps homeless kids in your neighborhood...
- wunderbra0
DOW Chemical is actually one of my clients.

oldelpaso, but don't you see the irony and deception in doing that?
you're "creating" a face...this is absurd. Did you "create" your own face? And no, your emo haircut and lippiercings don't count.
- oldelpaso0
who says you take it up the ass by working with multination conglomerates...
what about Attik, Poke, Mother, Digit - ie. they have all worked with CocaCola for example and dont seem to have taken it up the ass

NeinPattern,
may i ask what is YOUR profession (or whatever you wanna call it these days) is...?
It sounds like you're a bit resentful for being a part of it... I can't quite figure it out... If i'm right, then surely YOU can change the way and how and for whom you work and be able to go to sleep at the end of the day a slightly bit better... no?

I've been a designer for years.
And I *am* changing careers.
- oldelpaso0
surely thats a bizarre referrence.. but....
on the same token..
if ur not happy with ur face.. go to a plastic surgeon[branding guru] (who will create a brand new look for your face)
then you can get your emo hair cut and piercings from the speicalised shops [ie advertising, webstudios]
just because u didnt create something doesnt mean u cant change it...
- NeinPattern0
Oldelpaso, I think you just pointed out everything that's wrong with Design today.
sheesh @ "just get plastic surgery"

(Nov 13 07, 11:38)so what has made you this 'upset'? you've realized it's not all that great being a designer?
- ukit0
NeinPattern=NoPattern?
I'm guessing not.:)
- NeinPattern0
I've realized I'm not creating anything of real worth to people. You can argue all you want about the value of design and added-selling value, but I (and we) are creating garbage, detritus, noise. Not items people are moved by, feel emotion for, or want to keep and remember (art) but TRASH.

(Nov 13 07, 11:38)Good riddance.

well, that's a little harsh. But most art is disposable and has been disposed of. What remains is part of the art racket which is about decorating the houses of and lives of the rich. Nothing uplifting about it but then aren't we past the spiritual contained by objects? Anyway, tell the whore of babylon she can hold my pecker while I'm taking the piss.
Did use the idiom "taking the piss" correctly? Thank you.
- oldelpaso0
aaah.. so its personal issues...
lack of talent? opportunities? money? lost a girl? gained some weight? computer crashed? didnt get the comission?
So you might not be creating shit thats worth something.. doesnt mean no one else is.. surely
- oldelpaso0
u taking the piss?
- capsize0
what does it mean ffs!
