what's the stigma about seeing a mental health professional? Everyone has bad days but having bad weeks or months isn't something going away on its own or not will it be concealed by whatever distraction you cook up for long. Getting help saves wasting time.

Yes, pharmasalve your way out of the problem. Sheesh!
Good lord, you'd wonder how humanity lived with itself for the past 20,000 years!

Exercise, volunteer, fill up your time as much as possible.
Kind of a lame, but go read, how to stop worrying and start living life by Dale Carnegie.
Also, it's monday and monday's suck. So it's quite normal to feel depressed.

one word: lexapro.

(Oct 15 07, 07:00)no, pharmaceutical companies are evil

just think about how bad people have it in Iraq, Darfur, Burma .... then you will know that our day to day struggles are not that bad .....
think of all the good things that are going on around you ... and take it from there .... even if the only good thing is running water ....

visiting a shrink is no good unless you really believe it can help - otherwise you'll just be there fencing like a damn musketeer.
Anyway it's either about your parents or the fear of death.

There's no stigma - I'm just with ol' Cruisey Boy on this one - generally, I think psychologists are a bit of a redundant, over-prescribing waste of time.
Unless, of course and as I said, it's really bad - or there's no natural support network. I've known people who would benefit from psychiatric help - but most people who experience bouts of moderate depression? I think not.
Just IMHO, as I'm strenuously trying to point out.

it's usually cheaper to get into a taxi and let it out of your chest - but I'm not sure that applies for London.

(Oct 15 07, 07:05)Good Lord, NO! The exact-opposite is what you should be thinking upon - depression can only be mitigated by hope!
For Fuck's sake, that's a ridiculous thing to say, BattleAxe!
Turn off the news, stop buying the 'papers - get as far away as you can from those evils of reality that you have no control over.
Dig out optimistic/amusing news stories (the internet is good for this), listen to upbeat music, read a good fantastical book - don't mire yourself in more shit.

Off topic - does anyone else know that the U.S. is this only place has pharmaceutical drug advertisements?
Is that not fucked up?

Oh cheese and peas.
The first time I don't write "haha" in a post to imply I am joking.
Now I'm depressed that everyone knows of my little heart coupled with wee wang.
Actually, what you should probably do is just go to the nearest mirror and stare into your eyes/soul for a good while. Think of all the bad things that have happened to you in your life, and how ugly you are. Stare at yourself realizing how hopeless and insignificant you are in the world, and more importantly to the world of those around you. Think about how if you died, most people would not only never notice, but wouldn't even attend your funeral or think about you ever again. Think of the cookie cutter eulogy you will get, because you have made absolutely no connection with any other human being during your time on Earth, and how you would have been better off being an abortion or a blow job.
And then slit your wrists.
Get fucked.

(Oct 15 07, 07:12)well said Nairn,
if you're feeling down, the pain and suffering of others is not likely to cheer you up.
Personally even seeing traffic and wondering how on earth there is enough iron in the world to produce all the buses, cars and lorries is enough to make me feel worse, let alone thinking of wars and famines.
Going outside helps, as does exercise, getting out of breath does wonders for the mind!
- BattleAxe0
Narin, its just to put thing in perspective to our self imposed state of mind, I do it all the time ... now come down
- Nairn0
Come down? You sick bastard, we're trying to cheer each other up here! ;)
Sorry for the reaction - it's the exact-same as my Father's was when he reacted to one of his worker's depression, which was borne of never having been depressed himself. He had a wee bout of his own a couple of years later, which reframed his perspective massively, made him regret firing the poor guy, and helping him out.
Adjusting your perspective, thinking about the world view and overcoming your own self-impositions is the height of human endeavour otherwise..
..but it's doing exactly that that can make people feel a little glum about the state of the world.
I know it can for me.

i feel for you, i have had the same
I've been seeing psychiatrists briefly but they don't tend to help much in my case. They say things I already now and diving in the past is not always the solution (althought methods vary greatly of course, also per continent). If you are really without a way out it can never hurt to see one.
I've noticed going to gym helps, concentrating on work or go on a holiday. Changing context provokes new ideas and insights for me, at least. I read books like Power of Now (eckhart tolle). Self help books are not the answer either but some of them gave me a lot better view on how thoughts work than than any traditional western help. Learning how the mind works (self-insight not some doctrine that you must learn) helped my view into the causality of thought when it comes to emotions.
Hope you feel better soon! See your friends as much as possible, airing thoughts is very different than the internal mental construct that can keep going..and going...
I know many people use medicine to deal with things but i have seen that it can lead to strong dependency..

I'm at risk of redundancy.
Just waiting to hear the verdict now.
- emecks0
redundancy was the best thing that ever happened to me Concrete. Made me depressed initiallly but gave me such a throbbing kick up the bahookie to get on with self employment....
- Nairn0
Concrete - just try and ensure you stay critical to their needs - that way, should they need work doing in a month's time, you can charge them a swollen freelance rate..
..that's what I did when I was made redundant. Kind of worked out better for me in the long run.
- Concrete0
Thanks guys. :)
I'm trying to look at it that way. If it does happen, I think it will be a positive thing - just anxious of the unknown.
