I'd like to get a real graphic design job with a half decent studio instead of the current freelance/in-house work I currently do.
My question is, do agencies take you seriously if you don't have a degree?
Thanks

in my industry TV my education has counted for absolutely nothing, at no point have I ever been asked about uni or anything.
Hopefully the same is the case with your more poofy designy work, if you have good stuff then surely that should count for loads, unless people say we want it to look more post raphaelite and they want it in two seconds and your like fuck I hayae got the net so I can see what the fuck those poofs were up to I wish I had spent ime at uni to learn shit like this :/ aieeeeee I'M DEAD!!!so what I'm saying is good luck and make sure you have a strong portfolio.

A Degree means you're commited, educated and theoretically...have the skills to do the job, so given the choice...agencies employed those people
BUT
Great work usually trumps all...if your portfolio kills...shouldn't be an issue.

Mine's blue, and I use if for loft insulation.
Different strokes...

I would never hire someone with a degree

Yup, not that I'm the best designer in the world, but my degree had utterly no relevance to the various jobs I've had over the years, it always came down to ability and competence. Strangely, I was able to get a couple of half-decent jobs without having either of the two.
It's educational getting hard-ass professional agency experience, but ultimately, I'd much rather work for myself. You kind of strike me that way too.

work trumps education, fluff trumps all

Good feedback so far, thanks.

people who have degrees don't have belly buttons :/ !!
did you know that if you twist your belly button your bum falls off.

Ta, Nairn.
You're right to a 'degree', but I'm very isolated as a creative and have been for the past 3 yrs.
I think a creative environment and being around like minded individuals will help me grow as a designer...

(Oct 10 07, 06:18)back in 99 it was no degree necessary as learning 'the web' was the it thing with people, so companies hired anyone on who said they knew html. basically you can learn html from a book but you can't really learn good design.
after the bomb everyone was asking for a 4 year design degree to make sure you were taught good design somewhere along the way.
now, it's really 50/50.
i'd say if you don't have a degree it might be a little harder for you, but, if you have good design in your portfolio, and you present yourself and your work well you don't really need a good design.
there are some really great self-taught designers out there who never got a degree from a 4 yr. college.
good luck concrete. may the shwartz be with you.

in my case, didn't count for nothing,
an agency will take your portfolio more seriously than your school,
watch out for agencies that ask for a master in computerized graphic aproach

good lad concrete, this is exactly why I left my job and am on gardening leave the now, I needed to get back to creativity and get some different influences as I felt I can only go so far in this current company, also my boss is a full on whacked out weirdo.
Change is good concrete and also getting in amongst new creative people is great it really gets your blood pumping.
TURBO!!

(Oct 10 07, 06:21)I also heard they don't know the difference between "it is" and "it's" either.
:P

* "its" and "it's"
well, that failed.

I'd still prefer a degree to nothing, but the work itself is very important.

everyone i know is self taught anyway..
getting a degree essentiall just buys you more time to learn the craft.but if you can do it jus as well from home, for free.. then it means you are running your education very cost effectively
