Hey Karlo
I have Serato Live Scratch and love it. I cannot detect any lag and you can perform any scratch you can think of and it's fine.
I spent ages reading reviews and from what i can gather it pips final scratch in latency ease of use, robustness etc. I reckon The layout is easier to understand too.
I used it out the other night for the first time having gone from vinyl and loved it no hicups no problems, Made me love with music again.
Plus the forums are really helpful and support is top notch.
Folks like the beat junkies and A-trak use serato, so i felt confident that it would be good.
So theres my tip Serato all the way.

my broken shoe - thats great...
Now if you wer going to buy decks (we are beginners) what would you go for?
Yes I would love Technics but its all abit pricey for something we may not like...
What would you go for and please be honest

Honestly? - Technics
I first played on my flatmates vestax. To be honest they were lovely, better pickup speed the technics a touch more pitch bend etc, but if you get used to mixing on them or any thing with tonnes of bells and whistles, you may have trouble (nothing major) when playing clubs which almost always have technics.
If you buy a crap cheap set, you will end up paying again when you buy a better set.
"buy cheap buy twice.."
Worth checking local papers people always sell turnatbles when they get bored of them, and as technics are pretty much bomb proof, you should be ok.
But if there is no buget for that, make sure they are direct drive,
There are some stanton ones that seem good, (at least on specs) never used them thought:

hope that helps

Always technics.
If you're not scratching, I'd recommend just doing ableton. It's great

also check out traktor scratch, haven't used personally, but i've used traktor alone a while back and it was cool. i like native instruments stuff mostly.
have also used final scratch and had no issues with latency, but i don't scratch like mad. the last time this subject came up i said final scratch and everyone jumped all over me saying serato was vastly superior, so there you go.
- acescence0
oh, and def technics. i've had a pair for 15 years and one even fell off the back of a pickup truck in hasty escape, no problems at all.

this is all quite interesting... are the costs comparable?..
Just the fact that Serato is made by Rane makes it more appealing..
- mybrokenshoe0
yeah there about the same price, maybe serato is a touch cheaper. The serato is a well built, feels solid, but is simple. just plug your turntables into the box and plug the box into the mixer. No fiddly switches.

i got final scratch. i love it. it kinda makes me feel like i'm cheating though 'cause now i can play any track without having to search countless stores/sites/ebay/bins for the hidden gem. soulseek is now that gem :)
my friend has serato and he loves it too. i actually haven't used it so i can't really say which is better. i don't think there is a bad way to go honestly.

for real lvl. I'm no purist, but I'm also not on that level [no pun intended] where I think this is something for me... I love what guys like Yoda, Diplo et al do with things like this, but I also love going to see a DJ like Spinna just drop great tracks, no mixing and no headphones on...
it's still 90% selection and knowledge, 10% technology and skills for me...

no doubt technics. go on craigslist, you can usually find people who will sell at a good price b/c they are desperate for quick cash.
- lvl_130
yeah snuggs, i hear ya on that.
- neue75_bold0
it does sound like a fuckload of fun though ;)

I have been using serato now for almost a year, And I think its great. I am not super familiar with the competition, but i have never had a problem with it. They just came out with a new version that allows you to set the BPM of any track, and you can organize your tracklist by BPM. so good. I struggle with a lot of people that are vinyl purists, But as a producer also, i love being able to play my own tracks.

What a coincidence.
When I was in Miami last week, Calles invited us to a party at a bar in South Beach where two guys would be having a dj battle. They both had laptops, and we were rather close to them, so I was able to watch them do all that stuff - but I had no idea what the Serato Scratch software actually did.
Read about it last week, seems very cool. I don't do anything like that at all but seems like a cool thing for DJ's and whatnot.

Snuggs, Spinna came to Pittsburgh two weeks ago and my boy opened for him. :D
He was spinning at 4AM while eating waffles, hahah.

Fuck me I have just had a 25 minute conversation with this complete knob saying - yeah mate you want this and you want that - blah blah blah...
Sorry to be thick but why do I need a mixer with effects and bpm counter when Serato has all that with it?
GOODBYE my friend!
Complete cyock!
