hating on banksy to me is sort of like hating nine inch nails.
now, i'm no NIN fan, but i have to respect reznor. he did shit his way and in the end turned an industry on it's head on more than one occasion, and now is able to bring a quite honestly brilliant experience to a lot of people who truly love it on his own terms.
meanwhile there are plenty of other acts out there who are more fearful of losing the industry that 'supports' them than they are of trying to overpower it and do things on their own.
say what you will about his art specifically, but banksy has managed to consistently told the "art world" to fuck itself through his own work, while also maintaining a pretty big shroud of mystery (and, fairly consistently, putting out apt sociopolitical statements).
i can understand if you just don't like street art or perhaps maybe think his work is trite, but what he's done is quite impressive.

Banksy is like Apple. Every fucker has an opinion on the guy, mostly due to the fact that he become ridiculously successful.

Moments later, we happened to pass a table filled with white canvases covered in stenciled spray-paint images, near one of those ubiquitous "your-name-in-calligraphy" artists.
"Look at this guy," I said with a note of derision. "Knocking off Banksy."
The BBC estimated that the art pieces could be worth as much as $31,000 a piece.
- Now would be a great time to set up a fake Banksy artwork pop up shop somewhere in America.detritus

Maybe if all you wee fannies actually take the time to look at and understand banksy's work you might show more respect.
If you do 1% as well in your life time, I salute you.- We have given Banksy a look, he has been jammed down our throat for almost a decade.
utopian - I guess it's a British infatuation. There is nothing particularly innovative or compelling about his work.utopian

Some people choose not to respect artists for their efforts but rather critique the execution, as if that opinion has any bearing on the work itself.
As a comparison of both difference and similarity I'll mention JR. He travels the world as well, only allowing people to photograph one another then does massive black and white wraps of buildings, trains, villages, etc with those photos.
Both artists seem to want to interpret the world around them, from the point of the people, a common man if you will. One purely from a locals point of view, the other snarky, but seemingly from an every man opinion. Once could classify both target audiences as the 99%, and the target of Banksy's art the 1%, hence the identifiable but completely bodies of work.
Both are being done on street level with a team, JR openly, while Banksy operates covertly.
However Banksy has a range of work and abilities, bordering on a brand the way Thierry Guetta was depicted in Exit Through the Gift Shop. The simple fact Banksy has a theatrical release alongside a body of work including sidewalk stencils, altered oil paintings, and countless installations puts him in a word of his own. I can't think of another artist of any background be it acting, music, or sport succeeding in such a manner.
Congratulations to him / them for both their passion and perseverance, not to mention success.
