Some people choose not to respect artists for their efforts but rather critique the execution, as if that opinion has any bearing on the work itself.

As a comparison of both difference and similarity I'll mention JR. He travels the world as well, only allowing people to photograph one another then does massive black and white wraps of buildings, trains, villages, etc with those photos.

Both artists seem to want to interpret the world around them, from the point of the people, a common man if you will. One purely from a locals point of view, the other snarky, but seemingly from an every man opinion. Once could classify both target audiences as the 99%, and the target of Banksy's art the 1%, hence the identifiable but completely bodies of work.

Both are being done on street level with a team, JR openly, while Banksy operates covertly.

However Banksy has a range of work and abilities, bordering on a brand the way Thierry Guetta was depicted in Exit Through the Gift Shop. The simple fact Banksy has a theatrical release alongside a body of work including sidewalk stencils, altered oil paintings, and countless installations puts him in a word of his own. I can't think of another artist of any background be it acting, music, or sport succeeding in such a manner.

Congratulations to him / them for both their passion and perseverance, not to mention success.

    • Are you equating him with Warhol? Come on now - different leagues.

    • Warhol loved celebrity culture and being one himself, I prefer Banksy's method of avoiding limelightalbums
