Hi. I'm trying to look for housing in Boston from Nashville and it's harder than I thought. I need advice on...
a) Fort Hill area. Is it safe? sketchy? Here's a link to a specific area: http://maps.google.com/?q=loc%3A…
b) JP. I'm looking at an apt. that is close to Green Street but on the other side of Washington St. next to the park. Not safe? Ok?

Can't speak of Fort Hill (where is it?), but I spent almost 10 years in JP....ON GREEN STREET! I am very familiar with that area. Its not bad at all. As a matter of fact, I believe there is a music studio down there, and right across from that Spanish Market, there are some artist lofts. Really great area.
The prices here must be a freak show to you. Actually, the price of everything.
If you have any other questions, email me.

Hey, thanks pyeaton. Yeah, I have spent alot of time in Boston so the prices aren't freaking me out too much...though it's not as cheap as Nashville! I'm looking in $1600-$1800 range.

JP is awesome – great arts scene, very nice small restaurants, diversity. I grew up a town over in Brookline, and have plenty of friends over in JP
you'd love it there

Check beechgrove on the north side.

you should email greedolives.
i think he is a boston head. I think he is a reasonable fella.

For $1600 you can get a REALLY decent place in like Allston or something. Although you have to put up with the B Line and shitty college students.
- monkeyshine0
no no no. if I'm paying $1600 to $1800 I should be able to bypass shitty college students.
Shouldn't I???

stay outta fort hill. just trust me on this one. especially if you are looking in the price range you are, you can definitely do better.

i went to high school there and i can tell ya its a little sketchy around there to say the least.
- monkeyshine0
thanks, matty. ok, crossing fort hill off my list.

you should find a rental place near work, get with a real estate joint. they always have people looking to rent. Get a good 6 month look at your environment. it might cost you a lil with some short term rent, but you could find a better place to buy in the mean time

aint no thang. good luck in your search.

ha yeah fort hill, that's the other side of roxbury crossing, stay away from there. sketchy. Although, some nice houses up there (and a water tower that looks very disneyland), but for how much you're paying, you can do way better.
Green St/Washington St is not bad, but hardly optimal. There's a police station right there, but it's still kinda sketchy. Still a very latino neighborhood. You want to be closer to Centre St/South St or the Pond.
try these guys:

I can also check with my landlord, he owns a bunch of buildings. I'll shoot him an email tonite.

thank you, greedo! I really appreciate it.
So far, I'm now looking at places in Watertown, West Roxbury, and maybe Newton. Tres, suburbia, no?! Just seems like you get more for your money a little further out.
- GreedoLives0
if you can afford newton, go for it. it's beautiful and i think one of the safest cities in america. some insane old victorian monster homes in there.
West Roxbury is very nice, too, but it's too far out already for my taste.
Newton at least is still on public transportation (even though it's the pokey/crowded green line).
Btw, how many bedrooms/sq footage are you looking for?

For $1600-$1800 you should be able to rent a sick ass place almost anywhere....except maybe Beacon Hill. Everywhere else you will be able to get a HUGE 2 bedroom....or they are ripping you off.
Watertown kicks ass but only has bus lines (for pub tran)....as far as I remember.
If I had $1600-$1800 to spend per month on just rent I would live on the stretch of Mass Ave between Harvard Square and Porter Square. Some amazing amazing places tucked in on the streets right behind Mass Ave.
JP is cool, funky, some safe areas, some sketchy. For the money you can spend DO NOT SETTLE for a small place. My girlfriends sister (and her girlfriend) lived over in JP for a year and they had a HUGE place for like $1400 a month.

or try roslindale (next to jp) - anything there within walking distance to forest hills (end of orange line)
def. cheaper than jp

I'm looking in $1600-$1800 range/

Are you KIDDING?!?
Get a two bedroom in the South End!! For that much money you can get a sick place right downtown super safe exposed brick marble counters the whole deal! Living in JP or Fort Hill, that's for poor people (Like us!). Are you kidding? That much money you can have such an ill spot.
Hahaha sorry but I think EVERYONE here thought you were looking for somewhere "cheap" and Jamaica Plain is for struggling artists.
South End. Brownstone. Period.

yes
look at Beacon street also - in between Coolidge Corner and back bay. i know people who've lived in some nice brownstones with a 30 second walk to the C line - you should be fine in that price range
and go with a rental agent if you want the real info, and lots of options
