For $1600-$1800 you should be able to rent a sick ass place almost anywhere....except maybe Beacon Hill. Everywhere else you will be able to get a HUGE 2 bedroom....or they are ripping you off.
Watertown kicks ass but only has bus lines (for pub tran)....as far as I remember.
If I had $1600-$1800 to spend per month on just rent I would live on the stretch of Mass Ave between Harvard Square and Porter Square. Some amazing amazing places tucked in on the streets right behind Mass Ave.
JP is cool, funky, some safe areas, some sketchy. For the money you can spend DO NOT SETTLE for a small place. My girlfriends sister (and her girlfriend) lived over in JP for a year and they had a HUGE place for like $1400 a month.
