Its always gonna be a compromise between doing what you love, getting paid and hours worked.
As vespa said, its great that we can do something we love.
Although, there are some companies that really do push the limits of law in regards to working hours.

I am generally a very happy person, both at work and in life — but lately, my work schedule makes me feel as though I am missing out on more that I am willing to give up. Weeks blend one into the other, I don't have reliable nights off because I never know when I will have to be here until 8, etc. And, overall, I think my main frustration is the organizational ineptitude that I see with every small (albeit) wonderful company that I work for — I might just be tired of working for other people.
My new solution to this is to try it on my own — to become a freelancer, working with the company that I currently work for as well as taking on projects from friends and other compatriots that I generally have to turn down because my 9-7 work scheule doesn't permit participation. I am also lucky enough to have a wonderful friend who wants to do this with me; hence, we escape the possible loneliness of the independent's life...
It might be naive and idealistic (oh yes, I am! I happily confess), but I think the measure of working on my own projects, in my own time, is exactly the change I need. Plus, this allows for a lot more room to pursue other ventures and past times (dress shop! handbags! furniture building!) without entirely giving up on being a multimedia designer.
(I hope...)

you do have to push back on the hours thing. i used to work day and night regardless of whether it was a good job or not. now i only do that if i'm really enjoying it.
work to live! don't live to work!

pyeaton – Arnold just laid off a couple hundred people over the last few months, so I'm guessing there's a glut of creatives looking for work in Boston. very competitive

pyeaton — boston market might be hard, but I might recommend calling around to small firms for "informational interviews" (i.e. so that you can meet with them even if they aren't hiring, and maybe can give you some advice about where to try next)... also, I think Gather (the social networking group) was looking for UI designers...
