I'm heading to the Garden Island on Friday. Anyone been there? Any tips or suggestions? My plans are to find some good surf and backpack the Na Pali Coast, so any lightweight backpacking tips would be super. Thanks.

definitely have dinner at SushiBlues one night.
surfing on Poipou[sp?] is awesome.
kayaking on the rivers is awesome.
do the day long hike on the coast, the one that ends up at the 'most dangerous beach in the world' - it's an amazing hike.
pick up hitchhikers if you're driving, it's a fun way to meet some locals.
DO NOT SWIM anywhere you dont know if it's ok. There are significant numbers of sharks in certain areas, and some dangerous tides as well.
Take a helo ride.

Fuck the helicopters and the fat tourists who support them, its nothing but visual and audio pollution in one of the most pristine and beautiful areas of the world.
The surf at Tunnels is ridiculous. Also, Hanalei bay has some amazing long board rides, big tiger sharks there too ;)
I lived just up the road from Haena State Park near Hanalei. Haena is where you will likely depart from on your backpacking trip to the Napali coast. There is plenty of fresh water along trails, so bring a water purifier and save some water weight.
South shore at Poipu has some huge waves from time to time, warmer and drier on that side of the island.
Kauai is super chilled out. When the sun goes down it's pretty much bed time. Kapaa and Lihue offer the most in the way of nightlife, but not much. Enjoy.

Hanalei has this dope little spot to get shave ice. Best place on the island. Also across the street is a great camping store so if you need gear they have it and those guys can give you great info on where to hike.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm going to be hiking the length of the Kalalau trail so I'm looking forward to seeing "the most dangerous beach in the world"
Jds and unclesize - I'll be renting a board on the island. What size boards were you using out there? I'm usually on a little 6'1" but I'm not opposed to bigger boards if the breaks allow.

I'm the first to admit, I'm a lazy surfer. So I found a 8.0 to be pretty much ideal. But if its good in the Hanalei Bay try a 9.6 or 10, you can get a 1/4 mile ride, toes on the nose type shit.
Carefull of the yellow bottom boards they often rent. From below it looks like a sea turtle and a tiger shark might bump it, that happened to my friend.
Oh and to second what jDs said: DO pick up hitch hikers, know where your swimming (be especially careful of swimming near where rivers meet the sea), go Kayaking, be patient at the bridge crossings and always throw a "hang loose" to on comming traffic.
Cheers bro, enjoy!

Pacific Café if it's still there. It's a little spendy, but worth every penny.
You'll understand why if you go.
Enjoy...

take the helo ride first before you do anything it will be good for you to see wherre to go and check out hidden spots --- trust me it is worth it i just got back and did it the last day and wished i did it first -- take the zodiac rafts much better than the bigger boats --- sea caves are more accessible
