Fuck the helicopters and the fat tourists who support them, its nothing but visual and audio pollution in one of the most pristine and beautiful areas of the world.
The surf at Tunnels is ridiculous. Also, Hanalei bay has some amazing long board rides, big tiger sharks there too ;)
I lived just up the road from Haena State Park near Hanalei. Haena is where you will likely depart from on your backpacking trip to the Napali coast. There is plenty of fresh water along trails, so bring a water purifier and save some water weight.
South shore at Poipu has some huge waves from time to time, warmer and drier on that side of the island.
Kauai is super chilled out. When the sun goes down it's pretty much bed time. Kapaa and Lihue offer the most in the way of nightlife, but not much. Enjoy.
