rise is right.
it basically the product and the model(s) with charisma, plus set dressing and lighting, etc. The product being the most important for the client... yup the client?

It's production.
When it's not creative design, yet it's still done with media or print, it's just straight up production.Do you consider ad design when you're told what goes where by someone, design?
For instance a clothing company says, "put the phone number at the bottom and logo at the top" Is that design? Surely the "designer" did it in InDesign or Quark, or whatever...but did they create? No, they MADE.
MAKING and CREATING are really two different things.
In this case, I'd say it was production. Unless the concept was created and the artist art directed the photo shoot. However, that probably isn't the case becuase that is quite rare. It is far more expensive to sit over the shoulder of a photographer and complain and move and adjust rather than saying, "you're the photographer, shoot a hundred shots, we'll pay you X amount."
So what happens then is the "designer" is picking from a selection of photos and then slapping a logo on.
OR the place itself is saying, "ok I like this photo from the batch, put my logo and address on it"
I've designed and art directed a ton of ads and I'm currently an art director at a magazine on a regional level. So there's all sorts of small and some bigger ads. I hire production not designers for this type of stuff.
But again who knows if this guy coordinated the photo shoot?

now i totally remember why i hated those damn art history classes

Then I guess I'm wrong to ask if it fits in the design category. It doesn't.
But I don't think it's wrong to want to apply the same standards that qualify as good design to such ads. Original, clever, communicates effectively; this ad does not fir any of those well, if at all.

i like how the girl i s like, i have no emotion, but have no emotion, how do you feel about that?
- kld0
I wonder if the designer that put it together would be offended by this question; given it's not highly conceptual. but considered?

fir=fit

I had to present, photo concets for a fashion brand, by sketch and by inhouse setups... (it was for the the guy who designed xoxo)...
I designed & directed the shots, the photographer took them...
That's design still'

not design?... you truly are clueless.
- BonSeff0
and the dude is like:
if i didnt have the gay real hard i'd totally grap her butt
- BonSeff0
it all depends on the goal fate,
if it sells a skirt, its a good ad
ad being type + image
same as it ever was

I hope you guys don't think I'm tryin to be combative. Just being pedantic while asking for other opinions.
Rise, ConceptHue argued that what you did would fall under "Production" rather than "Design". I guess then you're getting into some dubious distinctions about what it really -takes- to communicate.
So on a more specific note, it's not graphic design.
- fate_redux0
2cents, have you ever contributed shit around here? Cause all you are is a nut biting bitch.

fatemedia vs. wink creative
hmm...
- fate_redux0
Bonseff, yeah, that's where I'm arriving. Different means to the same end.
- rise0
that ad is graphic design, why?
we're discussing it right now, and how if he communicated what needed to be communicated in the ad or not, and imo he did, he communicated the brand...
- BonSeff0
maybe you should clue us in on what you think graphic design is
- rise0
this thread is like, whats the difference between graphic design and graphic art.
