There is process, intent, purpose and execution. It communicates and solves a problem.
Its Design.

the definiton of design is really vague. what is design to you may not be design to somebody else.
good luck@

and memo to fate,
good on you to get some design discourse going on here. dont take anything in this thread as a flame
- MrDinky0
if u ever got an image and asked to place a logo on top of it, i don think ur job title changes
- jdcomba0
no, it is design. i'm not borderline. what i see is design.
- MrDinky0
most good GDs treat the images to make it better
and that doesnt mean color matching
- BonSeff0
usually in photos like that, the composition is what it is, no cropping necessary. but the set up was very intentional

look this isn't some production monkey freelancer in a dim lite basement doing these types of ads, there's alot of hands in this. AD, CD, retouchers, designer, production/prepress designer, and clients. There is design going on here.
- MrDinky0
i dont know, i alway get assets of image and logo..
i treat the image, crop it and place the logo.
- BonSeff0
and to the point of ad design being the status quo..
well there is the school of thought that if it ain't broke, dont fix it. and then there's, if it ain't broke, break it.
when it comes to fashion, tho former seems to be the safe bet.
product + sexy photo + logo =
laugh to bank easy peasy
- jdcomba0
who took the photo? well, if it's some random weirdo sitting in a room, taking images given to them, and logos given to them. then it's borderline. not so sure bout that.

I think the difference between "I could do that" and "I did that" is quite obvious.
- MrDinky0
but some body had to crop the photo and place the logo to balance
- fate_redux0
They didn't have to think about type. And Wink didn't create that logo.
- jdcomba0
i do understand what you guys are saying tho. i mean i could even make this shit. but still.....
- jdcomba0
but, whoever did it, had to think about the type. typography is a large part of design. wether it came in 1 minute or 45, it still is design.
- BonSeff0
that was a horrible metaphore.
i should just say you cant simply separate graphic design from visual communication.
*puts the beer down
- Solid0
'Graphic Design' is not the be-all-end-all. Just because its not 'Graphic Design' doesn't mean its not Design.
Why get caught up in labels? "Oh, its not graphic design, its [art direction, ad design, production etc".
Such a narrow view of Design.
Those Bally examples are absolutely products of a design process imho.
Thoughtful deliberation and decision making is evident; a definite orchestration of numerous specialists coming together to fulfill one vision. They communicate a message. They have polish and sense of purpose.
Design isn't just about type and being 'clever'.
- BonSeff0
i think i sorta get fate's idea.
its like taking a pic of a turd and typesetting the word 'crap' next to it. that doesnt make it an ad.
but if you place that ad in
shit sammich magazine it is an ad. and well intended
that is where i take issue i guess
- MrDinky0
misconception maybe that when graphic deisnger do illustrations
a GD can produce complete new art work in to poster but they still need to lay them out correctly
