I agree that some illustrators make great designers; take for example Charles S. Anderson:
Drawing can be learned. It can be learned by anyone. It's like being creative, we are born creative, that's why we all love Crayola out the box.
It's just that some move on to foster creativity and others study business.

There are too many blanket statements being made IMO. No one has really described/defined what they mean by "drawing"? (or "design" for that matter).
For example - the current QBN certified "BULLETIN GEEL METALLIEK" image - is drawing an essential part of that solution?
Does "drawing" mean freehand with a pencil on paper? Or with a tablet and Illustrator? Or how about AutoCAD? Are you cheating if you can't draw a proper architectural perspective without a straight edge?

and creativity is a bug!
I'm with my man for 18 months and already his mum and sister are painting and saying they got their creativity from me.
I'm not taking credit for their work cos I wouldn't hang it in my place to be fair, but creativity can be learned and so I'm sure drawing can.

I know alot of graphics designers that are self-taught artists. I am a true beleiver in- starting out drawing before so that u have some graphic ideas to stem from.
Usually those starting with computer instead of paper & pencil dont have as much of an understanding of laying out things, but at the same time, u should really try everything when in this buisness. You'll never know, u may run into that client that is looking for a drawing with type over it that might be willing to give away 1 mil for your services.

"Drawing can be learned. It can be learned by anyone. It's like being creative, we are born creative, that's why we all love Crayola out the box."
i would disagree.
I would like to ask why is there are so many designers, artist and etc from art schooll who is not that good?
- BNoir0

I stopped drawing all together for almost a year - I think my design suffered from it. I have to remind my self to draw now simply for practice.

Likewise anyone can pay to enter an art college; this does not mean they are there to take advantage of every second of education that is offered.
Just because you HEAR me, doesn't mean your listening.

I have seen alot people who try very hard and keep trying but the end product is not that great.
like any other skill sets, its all about the bell curve.
alot of us fall in to the middle but there are few who falls in the ends.

break it down - what is drawing?
drawing is the ability to take one's conscious ideas and translate them into physical visual representations.
So, yes for the most part drawing would be good for most designers to get better at translating their ideas, but you can't say that someone NEEDS it to be a good designer.
Some designers may have other methods for translating ideas.
side question: Do you think pure minimalists need to be good at drawing?
- radar0
what did you say dan?
- Spix0
did not read the responses here, but i dont think so. not at all. I would say no. Problably not. it is doubtful.
- BNoir0
I think we should leave bell ends out of this...
- MrDinky0
so why is most of people in PVN are not comparible to NT broadcasters?
alot of us try really hard but when in comparison, the work is not up to par
- dan_dan_dan0
I think you may be reaching Solid. It could be argued the topic--and it's detail-- is more than obvious.
"Usually those starting with computer instead of paper & pencil dont have as much of an understanding of laying out things..."
I disagree.
This is a very generalized statement; can you elaborate by providing examples?
- MrDinky0
so Dan and Bnoir
