There's only two days left before the presidential inauguration and the start of a massive PR campaign to privatize Social Security. Doing so would force huge cuts in retirees' benefits and leave our generation on the curb with $2 trillion in debt.
Trading Social Security for risky Wall Street accounts would leave us at the mercy of base politicians and war profiteers who decide which investment companies manage the millions of accounts, opening the door to more political corruption and wasted dollars.

poor america.

yep, crooked, but it passes on from presidency to presidency until it bursts.

And you know what the government will do 20-30 years from now when people like me in our mid-late 20s possibly invested SS money that way, and the whole plan has tanked and we're loosing money?
They will blame it on THE PEOPLE for making poor investment decisions. Mark my words, that will happen one day.
If NT is around in 2035 and we're all still friends/alive, I will proclaim a triumphant "I told you so!"
:) TG for 401K

Ha, the thing is I agree with you, but I see the petition as a temporary solution. I would never rely on the faint possibility that SS will still be around in 2035. I think most of our generation knows this by now too, really I'm just thinking of my folks who didn't know any better.
I'm already thinking commercial space travel is where my retirement money's at.

Privatizing SS is a stupid idea, as is health care savings accounts.
These bastards want to privatize everything, do you know why?
Because then all of that SS money will start flowing through investment banks, that is the only reason why they want to do this.

It begs the question (of corporate motivations behind this) of how much money can one person possibly need?
All the quiet efforts being made to put more money in the pockets of the people running the government and corporations, etc., there is a point you have to ask yourself how rich do they need to be?
- Mimio0
There are just as many reputable studies that say SS will be solvent with some minor adjustments until 2042. Republicans ahve been saying that the sky has been falling since the 60's.
- unfittoprint0
citizenship might be next.
- mrdobolina0
no doubt, solvent til 2042, I heard another report the other day saying that if this happens in 2006, it will be insolvent immediately.
Think about it, record numbers of retired people and no more money going into SS out of people's payroll checks.
Same thing with these health care savings accounts. OK, over a period of one year I save $3000 and I need surgery, that isn't even close to being enough money. But insurance companies will give you thousands and in some cases millions of dollars in coverage. How is it possible that my Health Care Savings account can compare?

for pete's sake, i hope i'll be a millionare before i retire. so i won't have to rely on stupid social security.
- mrdobolina0
well, if it is business as usual in this country, you may not even be able to rely on your 401K.
If my 401K gets robbed I'm blowing up some shit.

here's an idea...
strengthen your private portfolio w/ira's, 401k's and such...
... and stop depending on the government to put you in pampers when you're in your late 60's.
You really want the gov supporting you when you're older? FUCK THAT... that's communism... social security is a crutch that wasn't meant to be what it is now.
Do any of you understand why social security exists?
"Prior to the turn of the 20th century, the majority of people in the United States lived and worked on farms and economic security was provided by the extended family. However, this arrangement changed as America underwent the Industrial Revolution. The extended family and the family farm as sources of economic security became less common. Then, the Great Depression triggered a crisis in the nation's economic life. It was against this backdrop that the Social Security Act emerged."
We're not living in a terrible great depression right now.
Granted - the poor are poor... but GOVERNMENT is NOT the answer. The more government you implement - the more rules you're forced to adhere to and the less freedom in my your own capitalistic financial decisions.
Social Security was invented to aid during a time of financial crisis in a tough growth situation for the U.S.
Economic depression mixed w/major industrial changes forced Roosevelt to do what he did - or this country would have failed.
We live in a time now where there are so many options for us to secure our personal futures w/out relying on some stupid Government. The Gov is there to listen to US and do what we vote in... not 'provide' for us. FUCK THAT... I'll provide for myself and my family. That's my responsibilty.
The stupid conspiracy theories about the richer getting richer and privatization to increase investment banking power is weak. Yeah - if things are privatized - people will make more money... AND SO WILL YOU. That's what 'investing' is all about.
Look into personal investments and see what you can do to support yourself.
Social security is a weak.
It's not my responsibility to take care of you - and it's not yours to take care of me. If you need help - yeah... I'll help you. :) That's just how I am... but don't rely on the Gov to help you.
- mrdobolina0
bizzyman, if I am paying in to SS for my entire life. how does that equate into me being weak and 'living off' of the government?
- chrisartist760
poor us (america). any ideas on how to live with this for four more years? herb is good, but i need something more =)
- fate0
Why can't there just be a form of "tax returns" to drain Social Security in order to make amends for all those years of payment? Surely that's feasible, and even if SS is in debt, we know the government doesn't mind spending beyond its limits.
If they are going to privatize SS, they need to stop taking cuts out of my paycheck and return the savings from everyone who's already paid into the system.
- abizzyman0
mrdobs... :)
I didn't say you were weak, dude.
I said Social Security was weak.
You shouldn't be forced to pay into it. It's a failing program that shouldn't have been allowed to run on and on like it did after it served it's purpose.
Social Security does need to be reformed - and education needs to be provided about personal investment over the next 15-20 years to show people how they can design and shape their own financial futures.
Like it or not - our society is capitalistic - which means we have to fend for ourselves.
- chrisartist760
ditto fate. they can't possibly think they can bend us over AND **ck us....oh, wait....it's the u.s. gov.... ;)
- mrdobolina0
ok biz, peep this scenario:
I'm not very educated and I can only honestly hope to earn minimum wage or its equivelant for my entire life. At age 40 I am diagnosed with cancer and am unable to work any longer and am taken care of by my parents whom I eventually outlive. throughout my entire life I was only able to save a few thousand dollars towards my retirement. What happens when that money runs out?
- mrdobolina0
My point is, by circumstances that our out of our control, not everything works out as planned. social security is what makes this country different than 3rd world nations that would just let the guy in my story die in the street.
