give people the choice to open the site fullscreen or in the already opened window.
i like fullscreen because you cover the rubbish on the desktop.

It all depends on the site.
I dont really see the point on doing full screen on cnn.com for example,
but on certain websites, specially design stuff, I think its justified. It's up to each one to give the option, to go full screen, or not.
Its like a magazine made in an unconventional format, let's say square.
People might complain it's not as easy to hold, or it doesnt fit on your magazine holder, etc.
But sometimes, you want to diferentiate your stuff from the rest right? So why not?
I once saw a site that opened in like 10 little windows, at the same time all of them shaped into a square, it was not the typical navigation system we see on every page, yes ,maybe it was not very functionality friendly, but it looked awesome!
Jusy my opinion.
peace!

get over it

I aggree if you are given the opportunity to decide for yourself or if it really is something new or gives a whole new experience. But I hardly every find websites where it makes sense to go fullscreen.
In my opinion it is a mistake, same as with the popup windows. Some people still think they are necessary...

If we all obey the usability laws of nielsen, probably there will be no atractive sites at all.
We as designers have the wonderfull job to create something unique?
What I believe is wrong is to start a project with that kind of limitations without even getting to the point of analyzing what the project is about.
Why shuting so many doors from start?
no pop ups, no fullscreen..
no using red, no rounded corners, etc.

I often don't revisit a site if it changes my browser settings. I browse in windowed mode on a 21" monitor so like one of the posters above, I don't want my browser taking up the whole screen because it's not necessary.
I don't mind being given the option but really on a lot of sites it's not necessary anyway.
It sounds like a trivial complaint but to be honest, I have my browser, monitor and resolutions set the way they are because that's how I like them. I don't want some dickhead changing it so their tiny flash site can load in the top corner of my screen.
I wish some firefox boffin would develop an extension that can override resizing as an option.

" Why shuting so many doors from start?"
'Usability experts' will tell you that using these things are shutting doors for those who use non - graphic browsers..
A friend of mine put it nicely: "someone who tries to access a flash website wth a mobile phone must be an idiot and doesn't count"
- jamble0
lol! I always think the same thing about people who access websites from internet explorer ;)

Who said "no bitching about fullscreen when it's Yugop" not so long ago?
BTW, where's the Yugop thread from a few days ago? Nevermind..

It is not about "shutting doors". It is all about sense. If you are able to make a fullscreen website a wonderful experience then I aggree: Go for it! But I don't know any fullscreen website so far that gives me that experience.
P.S. There is the possibility in firefox to deny resizing of browser windows (luckily).

We already had the answer to this... Give the user a choice if you want to play around with their screen space. Maybe tell em.."We're going to do some weird stuff, OK?"
Solved.

i used to loath fullscreen sites when i was surfin' the web on a PC, now that i have a mac i enjoy fullscreen sites. i do like a choice though, in which case i usually choose the pop-up.
fullscreen sites allow more diversity in design. i think that's important.

How do you set firefox to deny fullscreen Simon?
- SimonFFM0
@Jamble:
To deny resizing in Firefox, go to: Options > Enable Javascript > Advanced > Uncheck "Move or reize browser windows".

I have dual monitors both at work and at home. If someone here does full screen, at least give me the option of minimizing or sizing the window. If it takes over my screen and the only other alternative is to leave the site I'm gone...
