My German Intern

I need to find a project for her today.

Here are the specs:

a.) She's 18
b.) Blonde
c.) Has a brother named Hans but didn't get my Hans Gruber Now I Have a MachineGun HoHoHo reference.
d.) She's never heard of Fitzcarraldo or Stroszek.
e.) She knows CSS and is listening to Dizzy Rascal right now.
f.) Is aware that Boris Becker only dates black chicks but doesn't find that peculiar.
g.) She doesn't know that I'm half-Jewish.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Paint it black

I got kicked out of Keith Richards' dressing room last night. Let's just say it was a misunderstanding.

With that said, now that I have a few hours to reflect on things, I have to wonder, have I found the perfect epitaph?

The Fountain

The new Darren Aronofsky film:

http://thefountainmovie.warnerbr…

Visually it looks interesting, but it's been six years since Requiem for a Dream, and I'm not sold on the preview. That ring worries me.

I hope I'm wrong though, because in my opinion, outside of Wes Anderson and perhaps PT Anderson, there's not a more interesting American director.

Pussy Cats

http://recordcollectionmusic.com…

"During John Lennon's separation from Yoko Ono in 1974 (the several month long period known as the "lost weekend") Lennon romped around L.A. with his new buddy, Harry Nilsson-drinking brandy, causing trouble and getting thrown out of nightclubs. In the midst of the party Lennon and Nilsson, along with friends Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and a rag-tag gang of others, headed into the studio with Lennon as producer. The result was Pussy Cats - a fascinating and often misunderstood album featuring a mix of classics and originals rearranged by Nilsson and Lennon to suit the wild mood of those most infamous days.

In January 2006, finishing the final mix for their new record A Hundred Miles Off and feeling a great sense of accomplishment, The Walkmen started talking about how it would be fun to try to recreate Pussy Cats. They were half joking at first but with their recording studio a month from closing and touring for the new record a month from beginning it seemed oddly like the right thing to do. They had always loved Pussy Cats - listening to it almost incessantly in their travels together and feeling something mysterious and magical with each listen. In a great, hilarious and rollicking way the album expresses feelings about musical and personal camaraderie that hit very close to the hearts of the Walkmen. After all Pussy Cats is the great "buddy" record of the seventies. Its celebration of rock 'n' roll, good friends, stiff drinks and excessive instrumentation is right up the Walkmen's alley and dammit all to hell if they weren't going take the opportunity to do something about it."

Yo La Tengo at The Fillmore Last Night

Nothing short of an ecstatic experience, taking it to the brink of madness and restoring my faith in music to drown out all the other nonsense in our lives.

And they currently have one of the cooler album names in a long time: "I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass."

A few samples in case you're not familiar with them:

Mr. Tough (which reminds me of Beck's Debra):

To top it off, The Fillmore handed out these awesome posters they made for the show, which was a nice bonus to complete the evening, and which is already on the wall in all its glory.

Cold War Kids

This may be old news to some of you, but thanks to a track Cactus posted in the FMT last week, I've been obsessively listening to them today. In my opinion, their music is beautiful, and I'm so looking forward to their show October 7th here in SF.

Brian Jonestown Massacre show last night

A few thoughts:

1. Lots of Castros, Garfunkles, guys named Raj with greasy curls, older gentlemen with ponytails, and an opening band (The Tyde) straight out of Lords of Dogtown.

2. Joel is back! In fact, his sideburns and beard are so prolific he could pass as Cat Stevens (at least the version that got deported). Ironically, about twenty minutes ago I saw him walk by my office, with the same red beanie on, and when I said "nice show last night" he smiled and said, "right on, brother."

3. A nice clean two and a half hour set, with next to no hijinks from Anton. In fact, he came out from the beginning and said, "All I can do is try my best" and then played the first four songs with no commentary. Of course, there are always people who come to see BJM purely to heckle Anton and get him started, and there were 3-4 small exchanges at the end, but he kept his composure, and finally just said, "I don't care what you think, buddy' to one boisterous twat.

4. I came to the show with no ticket, waited 45 minutes in the cold, and then ended up with backstage passes courtesy of The Tyde, who are awesome in their own right (and who had some powerful fruitknock).

5. Line of the evening from Anton: "I'm gonna go on Dr. Phil, and when he starts calling me a junkie I'm gonna say, look dude, I know Oprah says you're cool, and there are a million fat housewives who probably agree, but you're still cross-eyed, and in case you didn't know, that's God's way of telling fucks like you not to procreate."

< Things Kept Burning

My new collection of stories, Things Kept Burning, is now available:

http://www.lulu.com/content/3823…

I'm especially excited to announce this here at Newstoday, as several early versions of these stories first debuted in the PVN. Also, our very own Mayo did the layout, designed the cover, and also served as my copy editor. (She did an amazing job.) Keeping with the collaborative spirit, both Rand and mattyd wrote quotes for the back cover.

Anyway, I apologize for the self-promoting (it's sort of a necessary evil with this sort of thing), and wish everybody an awesome weekend.

Thank you.
