I'm going to Tokyo. On a semi-budget.
Where should I stay? Harajuku?
I'm just going to roam the streets for a week. I welcome any suggestions. Thank you

Sangenjaya Eki(station) area or near Komazawa Koen(park).
From those areas you can walk to Shibuya, Nakameguro, Daikanyama, and Gakigei-Daigaku.
Gakigei-Daigaku Eki gives you good access to Yokohama and Kamakura for the temples and beach.
Sangenjaya walk up to Shimo-Kitazawa.
All those aforementioned areas are the 'cool' bits. Shimo-Kitazawa is the indie studeny low rise buildings, cheap, vintage stores etc. And my favourite Ramen-ya(ya = shop) https://goo.gl/maps/sw6cSDJSrcGJ…
Daikanyama is a bit more up market, do check out here:

And look for cafe's loads of good ones around there.Look for this no longer-hidden gem of the 2nd oldest baseball batting centre in Japan:
https://goo.gl/maps/GmLk5rsE92zG…Nakameguro has a nice river that you can walk along and check out the stores. With a park at the start https://goo.gl/maps/GYWRnX3nRcC4…
You can also get to Shibuya, and walk up to HaraJuku. Then across to Ometsando if you want to see all the mega rich Japanese and shop at LV.
- Walking between all those areas will keep you busy for a week as there's tones of hidden gems, little cafes and bars etc.shapesalad
- This sounds all very cool, I will go there when my kid is a bit older. So I'll ask you again in 5 years.Longcopylover

When you walk from Sanjengaya to Shimo-Kitazawa, you see random stuff like this:

Bainbridge, Kyoto is nice.
We did temples and gardens, bamboo forest in Kyoto. Liked the chilled vibe there. Then when we did Tokyo we didnt bother with any of the temples etc there, just all about city vibe, shopping, eating, walking.
If you are into synthesizers then 'Five G Music Technology' in Harajuku is a must. There's a small (locals only style) fried chicken bar on one of the floors beneath that's worth a visit.
I found an app for my iphone that showed kind of local insider insight into where to eat/drink and shop. Also another one for art, that showed galleries and exhibitions you'd never find otherwise.
Osaka's meant to be great too, bit more upbeat than kyoto.
Could do like Osaka > Kyoto > Toyko
That'd be a sweet city break trip.
Then hit a beach resort somewhere for some chill :)As Shapesalad said, walk between all the main areas and you'll find some amazing shit. Some beautiful architecture in sidestreets, little architect designed homes.
As well as high fashion or designer stores, hunt out vintage stores. The curators there have some amazing collections.

I'd recommend this museum in Hakone, kind of a day trip, but the first time I went with my wife in 2001 I loved it. We went back when my son was little to show him the giant hanging net installation that we'd ran around in, but sadly it was being refurbished, he cried quite a lot. Seems to be fully open again.
I remember the first time we had to get a ferry that was skinned to looked like a pirate ship.
There was really beautiful garden nearby there too, so we also went there.
-- Some amazing sculptures in the grounds and loads of Picasso stuffPhanLo
- Wee bit more of the place https://www.youtube.… I think there's those wee onsen bath places in town tooPhanLo

Should I be ambitious and go to other cities or places outside Tokyo?

"If I have 2 weeks, where else should I go besides Tokyo? "
Get a JR Rail Pass so you can ride the shinkansen and go to Nara where you can pet the deer. Hit up Nagoya where there is the Ghibli amusement park. Get to Osaka and eat okonomiyaki before you visit Universal theme park/Mario Luigi land.
I leave on Tuesday and my family and I are going to hike Mt Fuji. And we're going to catch a Yokohama Baystars baseball game.

Depends on your budget.
The cities are much of the sameness at a lesser scale than Tokyo. So I'd go for the nature, the hot springs(maybe not in a heatwave), beaches (in heatwaves), mountains to cool off etc.

Stay over for a night in Kyoto? Or just day trips?
