Tell him Adobe updates have introduced so many new bugs in Ai, PS, In etc that it's usable and you are taking a career break until they fix their antique bloated shit softwares (plural).
- At least the first part of that is honest.shapesalad
Tell them you’re too busy and that’s that.
I think I'd be a fan of radical — if diplomatic — honesty, in this case.
The fact is that you can't really get out of this in a way that *doesn't* look like it's somehow connected to your friend's and her husband's relationship.
As such, plainly stating that it wouldn't be appropriate for you take this project up, and ‚ as ArchitectofFate said — offering to pass it on to a trusted colleague/acquaintance is the way to go.

- I often wonder why people put such amounts of energy into doing everything other than just being forthright.Nairn
...is it good money?
If no work has been done, and no money has changed hands, just hand him off to one of your designer friends and give him a bs explaination about family illness, discgolf tournaments or you taking a hiatus to find yourself on a mountain

Or, you simply tell him that — as things stand — it wouldn't be appropriate to continue this professional relationship.Continuity

My Mum doesn't let me play with you anymore because you are a bad influence.
How do you not know she’s the violent one throwing allegations at him?
"Fuck off you cunt"
I agreed to do branding work for the new husband of an old friend of mine. I like him, and have gotten to know him over the last year or so.
But now they're separating over domestic violence (!) and potential fraud. I've gotta take her (old friend's) side and distance myself from the husband and his work.
We have a signed contract from some months ago, but first payment hasn't come, so work hasn't started. Nothing in the contract keeps me from dropping the project.
Any advice for announcing to a friend that I won't be working with them over social reasons? He's someone I'll continue to run into, so I'd like to avoid scorched earth.
