    I think I'd be a fan of radical — if diplomatic — honesty, in this case.

    The fact is that you can't really get out of this in a way that *doesn't* look like it's somehow connected to your friend's and her husband's relationship.

    As such, plainly stating that it wouldn't be appropriate for you take this project up, and ‚ as ArchitectofFate said — offering to pass it on to a trusted colleague/acquaintance is the way to go.
