Has anyone prepped ads for the Wall Street Journal?I just lost a client and was hired the next day and I don't want to screw this up!

They have a 1/4 page ad across the bottom of the page. I have no idea what size that is.
I surely never worked with some of the production requirements either. I need help!
Do I make sure all the graphics are 200 dpi?
Pretty cool for the portfolio to have an ad in the journal, but I gotta get it there first!

- keep your graphics at 300 DPI (200 DPI is the minimum)
- are you doing CMYK or B+W?
- when you export your PDF make sure you use the "PDF/X-1a:2001" profile
- watch your colour density (220 max)- you can adjust images in photoshop if you have images- and: SNAP ICC newspaper profile is available at wsjmediakit.comsted
- or not, idk maybe they switched to WAN-IFRAsted
- CMYKcanoe
- if you're outputting PDF from InDesign, the the combo of the ICC profile and PDF Job options should be fineGnash
- I'm a bit old school and convert all raster images in Photoshop, but the cool kids import RGB to Indesign and convert via PDF and profiles.Gnash

here's the spec for ad sizes in plain language here:
Q/page strip is 10.87" x 5.25"
but confirm with client exactly what they book. papers have a billion options that vary per section- I never understood why they can't link the dumb print job profile to these documents, dreamed about media kits having indesign templates and icc profiles...sted
- ^ it's so fucking frustrating. it's like this passive aggressive jab at 'all those kids with the new fangled computers"Gnash
- many still use Pica measurements as well.Gnash

the icc profile, and more importantly, the PDF job options, that sted referred to you can download off this linked PDF.
- follow the instructions and you're golden.Gnash
- - watch your colour density (220 max)- you can adjust images in photoshop if you have images
never done thiscanoe - it's simpler than you think. Add up the 4 CMYK values and the total should not exceed 220. so, 40c40m40y100K = 220 total inkGnash
- so if you make a colour in InDesign make sure the totals are more than that.Gnash
- newsprint is an ink sponge - over that 220 limit and clots start to get muddyGnash
- after you make the PDF, acrobat has an "Output Preview" option with various settings and warning indicators once you set parameters like Ink limitGnash
- so review the PDF with that and it should highlight trouble spotsGnash
- I get it, I'll have to give this a trycanoe

I remember working on a few newspaper ads in my second job... but only from an art & copy perspective.
The only thing I remember then was...
It should be quick... like there's less attention given to ads in newspapers than there is in magazine ads.
The WSJ seems more of a reader's paper (disregarding political affiliation) so I'm not sure if it applies. Seems like a fun medium considering the amount of exposure.
Gnash, you're always so nice to me. Do you have a garden?
I'd like to come over this summer and eat your salad.
- Downvoter must be a carnivorecanoe
