I'm stuck working with an older version of ID for now and just got handed a template file (.indt) that won't open. Apparently it needs like 400 plug-ins I don't have. Is there a way around this?

post a link to the file. i can try and save it down for you -- what version are you working on?

also, you can just change the extension to .indd, but if you have a lower version it won't open anyway

Most of the those plug-in warnings are just that, warnings. Those are newer ID features that you won't have so if anything is using the new features it'll import badly, or not at all.
On average most ID layouts I see aren't super dependent on newer features, and even if they are it's only a few things that you'll have to re-build/fix. Just make sure to QC what you import against a PDF of the intended layout.
