Curious what you freelancers / business owners pay your Agents / Salespersons / Referrers.

Also curious what a Salesperson in an Agency / Design Firm makes if they're paid a commission (and what their base salary might be if paid one). I realize this varies based on what market you're producing in...

I've a number of referrers whom bring me work on a regular basis but I'm finding I can't work w/some lately as they want way too much of a % of my initial price. I'm willing to give a finder's fee etc but I'm not giving up half (or more) of the nut simply because you referred me to someone yet did nothing else (no project management, client management etc... just 'here's some work, gimmie a cut... peace!').

What's a fair % on a finder's fee these days? Do you adjust the % based on price (ie, 10% under $1,000... 15% for $1k-$3k... 18% for $3k+... these examples may be insulting / way off... I truly do not know). <3

    10% across the board.

    • But occasionally it is 5%, my bad.utopian

Great thread. I'd really like to know as well. I've been wanting to get into finding an agent or rep company myself. I know there are representation companies out there like Aarra.

Ponyboy, what do you do and how did you go about even getting an agent or referrer? How does all of that work? I'd say 50% for finding a new client sounds most excellent.

    • I'm multi-disciplined (illustration, design, animation, web (design & dev)... some video... all stemming back from doing a ton of Flash for 10+ years)PonyBoy
    • My referrers came from various places. At times they're former AE's from Agencies whom I built-up relationships with and I'm now a source they use...PonyBoy
    • ... in their own world of freelance or at their current Agencies. I also used to do a ton of Real Estate work. I have a whole group of referrers that all...PonyBoy
    • ... came from a huge Condo developer that fell apart... All sales folks that just kept in touch and keep pushing me work in R.E.PonyBoy
    • So... basically my network is 15+ years of word-of-mouth via Design / Web Agencies and Real Estate Firms... I don't have a specific 'Agent' if-you-will.PonyBoy

i do exactly what DRIFTMONKEY said. 10% across the board. I pay that out and i ask for that back.

I normally ask for a finder's fee if I do some legwork on the project. Otherwise, I don't ask if it's a simple "Hey, I'm busy so you should use this guy".
