This gets a bit incoherent at times but I think her sentiment is bang on. Takes a set of nads to drop that bomb in a room full of sf tech dweebs too.

Nice, thanks for sharing bort. Good speech.

Design got really up its own arse these past 10 years.

I like her. I recommend.

If the youtube had embedded I'd say this was worth putting on the cover.

I agree with her point. I also think designers have something worthwhile offering the world in the form of pro-bono work. Mostly what we do is help companies make more money. I'm trying to spend 5% of my time doing the same work I do professionally for organizations or causes that can use it. I'm just getting started really, I'm pushing my agency to make it a part of the company as well.

I know the 'design can change the world' sentiment has been around for ages, but it feels like the software/product world has taken it to a whole new level of delusion. The SF tech community has its head so far up its own ass it has lost sight of reality. Your products may get used, and in some cases they truly do change the world, but for the most part you're making apps and gizmos so people can get their dongs touched or save a trip to the grocery store.

I think that more and more professions are acting like _____ can change the world. We want to do be respected and make money, but we don't want to do something outrightly evil. It's a luxury sadly not afforded to many people these days.
What really resonated with me was that we shouldn't let our professions be a substitute for civic action. We have to do more than eat conscientiously and have a benign job. We should find ways to actually take action.

I liked this talk. I liked that it's about not really respecting the statement because you aren't taking any real risks or putting any skin in the game.

I prefer to listen to talk like this as it's often a reality check for us all. Designers tend to fapp in front of a crowd about their work. Sometimes it may be interesting but other times it's a collective fapping session about "aren't-we-a-funny-quirky-bunch doing-some-cool-quirky-stuff-for...
Having said that I can see myself end up being one of those tossers in the video saying "caress the ipad..." with a few million quid in the bank. NOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooo!
