Wondering if anyone can suggest some ideas for our next internal print project. We usually make a small booklet from everyones submissions.
Year 1 - Screen Print
Year 2 - Riso
Year 3 - ?????I was thinking letterpress but that is too pricey i think.
Can any suggest anything else?I saw something once with magnetic ink which look really nice but don't know much about it

Letterpress booklet? Internal for who?

Maybe do something with 3D printing.
- Unless you're really only all about traditional print.monospaced
- not bad
but not everyone knows 3d - how would this even work? we have a 3d printer thoughNeverEver - it was just an idea without knowing anything about your peoplemonospaced

Why not get some lumps of wood CNC hewn with whatever it is you're wanting printing, then hand wood block print your pages?
Again, I have fuck all idea what you're trying to achieve.
- I think they just want to make a collaboration piece, just for shits n giggles, and an excuse to do specialty printing processesmonospaced
- omg1
- well, if plain ol' letterpress was too expensive, I suspect this'd be out too.detritus
- ..best example of that I've ever seen, btw, thanks for sharing.detritus
- that is pretty sickmonospaced
- How do you get that made? Do you hire a sculptor?omahadesigns
- it's just a fancy embossing die with more than one depth levelmonospaced
- hipster says so last seasonfadein11
- I think that's debossed & embossedCosmodrome
- Holy crap they can make really nice stuff: http://www.jukeboxpr…zarkonite
- any ideas on where do you order the dies. i have a 2 ton arbor press already for pressing bearingsgilgamush
- http://www.universal… these guys want some serious money, gotta be somebody cheapergilgamush
- hmmm, maybe you can work with a local printer?monospaced
- They will order the set of dies and mark up the ever living fuck out of it unless I get several thousand. Local trophy makers are more apt to put me onto theirgilgamush
- Their connections but no luck thus fargilgamush
- Buddy works for a press and another buddy works in a metal fab shop. Neither one of their bosses has a clue how to help me out without taking a beating themselvgilgamush
- Oh, and I forgot to mention, I'm debossing sheet metal so I need a matching male and female die. With paper you don't nessecellery need a femalegilgamush
- I have polymer male/female embossing dies made for my home press regularly on the cheap. Didn't realize steel was so hard to come by.monospaced
- That's pretty cool. Pics or it didn't happen though right. Yea to get the Rockwell hardness to have the die not wear out immediately it has to be steel harder tgilgamush
- Than the steel your punching. The harder the steel the more difficult it is to machinegilgamush
- Or any material reallygilgamush
- You don't believe me?monospaced
- Not sure if I'm speaking out of my ass here, but I'd contact CNC companies who work with Metal, gilgamush. Can you create 3D files of the forms yourself?detritus
- Here's a plate I made recently. Used it for printing/embossing here.
http://f.cl.ly/items…monospaced - Polymer, only $70 for the 5x8 male/female.monospaced
- No shit huh, that's pretty sweet. Yea I have access to solid works. What program did you usegilgamush
- Actually, I just send over a 1-color Illustrator file to the vendor, and in a couple days they send this back.monospaced
- i seegilgamush

I hear online may take off soon.

I love the embossing but i'm guessing that each design will require a die to be made and with 30+ submissions, the price would end up being really high to produce wouldn't it?
I also though laser-etch might be worth considering as well.
Thats why i'm asking you guys to suggest anything else. There is a budget with this, hence why we did risograph last year
- Laser is bad for booklets, it cuts through paper.omahadesigns
- detritus0
re: lasering - How many of these booklets are you making up? If it's a few, and you think letterpress is expensive, wait 'til you see laser-etching costs!
(although, again, without a clear picture of what you're intending, it's hard to tell).
That out of the way, presumably you'd laser-etch the flat sheets, which you'd then compile and make into a booklet (as you would every other print process), in which case you'd not have to worry about 'cutting through the paper'. Presumably you'd go with a thick enough stock, anyway. Only needs to be 300gsm+ to start getting etches, although you'll need to sample papers as some etch 'to colour' some 'to yellow' some 'to something else entirely, and not in a nice way'.
if you're wanting to use a laser somehow - you could use one to make the aforementioned woodblocks to print with. You won't get *quite* as deep an impression, but you can achieve a much higher resolution than with a CNC.
- I'm guessing between 20 - 30
given thats how many submissions there will be and each person will want a copy plus a few for the studioNeverEver

I think this is a terrible idea, but.. well, anyway:

What's the point in bumping if you don't expand on wtf it is you specifically want to achieve?
- thought it was pretty simple what i was asking. Plz tell me different print processes?
i onyl know riso and screen from experienceNeverEver - I had to look up what Risograph wasmonospaced

Turn it into a 2-3 color project and have it printed offset with overprinting.
- Gnash1
so the only print processes you have ever used was Screen and Riso? (and was the last time you used Riso?) Man, that is old school.
couple of questions as your request is vague;
1. what format are the 'submissions'? ie, color jpegs, oil paintings, fucking Riso prints...
2. what quantity of 'booklets' will you need
3. how many pages is it.
4. do you have a defined budget.
5. seriously, Riso prints?!- no budget defined just yet - this is flexible
approx 30 pages
we wont do riso this year, we've already done thatNeverEver - format can be determined - at this pointNeverEver
- my question is merely what are other print processes you guys have experienced with really. we are looking at more digital design with printed as the outputNeverEver
- so dont think oil paintings would fall under thatNeverEver
- offsetmonospaced
- There aren't many print processes out there. Riso seems like a mix between offset and a xerox. Other than that you're looking at specialty applications.monospaced
- like embossing, foil stamping, letterpressing, varnishing, laser cutting, etcmonospaced
- good to know - thanks monoNeverEver

Bought a Riso RP3105 two months ago.
Finally had the time to try to set it up...Have been for two long days trying to figure out how...
For the Printer I set up my old MacBook 2007 with Mac OS X 10.7.5 in which I installed first an Emulator with Mac OS 9...
Cause that's the last Mac OS compatible with the Software and Drivers
No sucess and that System...Stone Age...
Then I installed Virtual Box and now have Windows XP for the first time since over 14 years.
Windows XP is the last Windows OS supported and because I want to print PDF's I thought well that's okay.
I extracted the Riso Software for Windows XP via Command Line mounting a .win image.
The driver was sucessfully installed.
But it doesn't print. The Riso recognizes a connection (LPT to USB) and goes on Data- Mode and says that's ready to receive Data but then turns to Idle.
When I try to install the Riso Software (RISO RINC 3) I receive a notification that I can't install 16-Bit Software on Windows XP.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to go around that.
I will try to use it via CUPS as well but damn! It's the third day and I've been reading in Forums and going on Command Line in 3 systems...
Does anyone knows how to do this or has any experience here?
Anyone printing with Riso?
