Decided to learn how to play bass.
After 20 years not really trying to play guitar properly.
No, it's not because it's two strings less and therefore it's easier. It's because I really more into rhythm sections, beats, groove and that sound.
Got some Talking Heads, Little Dragon, Stone Roses, The Clash and some reggae songs to follow and learn.
Anyone here playing bass?
Tips?
Suggestions?
Resources you can share?Thanks!

3 of the greatest IMO
James Jamerson, Funk Brothers/ Motown/ Detroit... played on a load of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Temptations, Supremes etc. IMHO the greatest... flawless improvisational style... If it's Motown it's either Jamerson or Bob Babbitt on bass and they're both phenomenal TBF.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jam…Donald Duck Dunn, Booker T & the MGs / Stax / Memphis. Another session player, cool fucker... Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, possibly best recognised as the bassist in the Blues Brothers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don…Carol Kaye, Wrecking Crew/ L.A.
One of the most prolific session bassists, played on loads of Phil Spector, and everything pop from Beach boys to Monkees... wrote some really iconic lines... just check out that discography.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car…Avoiding Jazz here as conversation has already descended to bass solos (which is not what bass is about IMO) but Richard Davis's playing on Astral Weeks makes it the greatest bass record of all time...
I could just keep going... Jet Harris, Tina Waymoth, Mike Watt, Geezer Butler, Cliff Burton... Everything they play on they transform...
TBH The beauty of bass is that you can start playing and have a gig that weekend... but yeah, you are now part of the rhythm section, if you do your job well no one will notice you and everyone will dance.
- Fuck! Awesome! Yes, I don't want to be noticed and want everyone to dance!oey

Stanley Clarke
Jaco pastorius
Marcus Miller- +1 for Pastorious. Quite possibly the most creative bass player in history.VectorMasked

practice your pentatonics every day all day, then when its time to jam, you just need to know the scale, then its on like donkey kong.

A lot of people don't give Flea a lot of credit mostly coz he is famous and plays for a band that is commercially successful, or they just don't wanna give him enough credit just to sounds cool, but the guy is fantastic when it gets to rhythm. He is one funky dude.

I always love this one.

I switched from guitar to bass when I was playing in bands. Personally I didn't pay much attention to other bassists and just did what I felt was needed for the song.
Important to realise though that as a bassist, you're not there to show off. So suppress the need to throw in wanky bass lines competing with the guitarists.

Agree and disagree.
It really just depends on what you want to do, the style of music you play, and having a good sense or the talent to understand what your songs need and what you can do to help them. Doesn't matter if you get to play a single note every 10 seconds or if the song needs an aggressive and complicated approach. The idea that drums and bass need to be somewhat simple, straight-forward focused on rhythm and that establish the basic melody is a bit of an outdated concept.
It just comes down to being a little versatile, and being able to understand that sometimes you need to let others shine and that sometimes you are the one that needs to show off.
And by the way...
This reminded me of the amazing Kim Deal. The least technical musician on the planet, but amazing when it gets to simplicity.
Simplicity pays off like in the song "Where is my mind?". One of the most powerful songs in rock history.

This guy has an excellent youtube channel that goes from concepts to techniques throughout various levels of ability. He wears a glove on one hand to counteract a neurological disorder that would otherwise impede his playing and created the channel to pass on his knowledge in the event that he lost his ability to play.
