Anyone ever trade logo design/branding or a website for shares of a startup? Thinking of asking for shares instead of payment but not exactly sure how to go about it and what a fair amount would be, being that this is a startup. It has the potential to get big though. Any thoughts?

I've never done it, but I think it could be good for both your you potentially. They won't have to put money out right now and you will have a vested interest to do the best you see fit. I would say that there probably isn't a set standard for this, but that you should talk to them to see if they are interested. Sounds pretty cool. good luck.

Thanks capn. It could go either way, but it may be a good opportunity to trade if they go for it.

To be fair, I've done work for equity... which is a bit different.

Is there a market for these "shares"? What's their value? how would you trade them for money in the future?
Most businesses fail within a couple of years. Most businesses that do not fail don't ever get to the IPO stage... that might not ever be their goal. Most businesses that IPO don't go on to become the next google/facebook. Most businesses that IPO need so much capital to get to that point that your initial equity will be diluted out of existence by subsequent funding rounds.
So basically, those shares are worth nothing today, and probably nothing tomorrow. Consider the work charity and do it if it's good for your portfolio/future business opportunities. The shares are a lottery ticket, nothing more.
- Also, most stocks are never worth more than a few cents or dollars at best.ETM

better to quote them a real cash price; then negotiate down to what they may more reasonably be interested in paying and then making up the difference in punitive speculation of equity in their boondoggle.

I developed a re-brand for a bathroom remodeler and he remodeled my bathroom. Thankfully, everything turned out ok.

They offered donald sutherland 15% of gross instead of a fee for working on Animal House -- he turned them down insisted on a $50K fee. There many stories like this.
