Terrible website. Horrible reviews. I'm setting my expectations low when watching it. I may end up liking it.

Not to hijack the thread, but I've noticed that music sites for artists are much worse looking than they used to be. An example is http://www.rihannanow.com
It's a white page with a giant youtube embed and some buttons for downloading. No user experience, no fancy design. I see this all the time, and I assume it's because Rihanna's management figures that nobody gives a shit. And, maybe they're right.
But, is anyone going to Rihanna's page because they want to download her albums? Not really, they just use Spotify, iTunes, etc. Do they go there to see her videos? Probably not, they just go straight to youtube. So you'd think that her official site would be all about making some kind of creative experience ad for her brand. Maybe they just don't see a value in it. However, I find it hard to understand why they are spending $75k on a music video and next to nothing on a web site.
Maybe something similar is happening with movie sites?

^ That's interesting but I think you answered your own question. Nobody is going to the website, they are consuming content through YouTube, Spotify, etc. Although it appeals to us as designers, you have to question what the return on investment of a "creative experience" type website is. Often the kind of site that people look at for 30 seconds, then closes and never visits again. That money is probably better spent paying another girl to shake her ass in the video :)

Yeah, there must be no value getting visitors back to a music site. They probably just put a video b/c they don't know how to monetize it.
For a sci-fi movie I would hope they would some interest in a movie site even if they never visit again.
Maybe the kids don't go to websites anymore.

To nb's point above, I've almost never gone to a movie's website.
I see commercials, billboards, then read reviews, then see it.

Even http://www.kanyewest.com/ is bad.

It's like restaurant websites. I'm only going to go to the website for menu, hours and contact info.
Restaurant website designers are often bad at making that information easy to access.

One thing I love on movie websites is simple schedules of release dates in cities. I live in a small-market city and many small to mid-size movies open a little later than they would in NY, LA, Toronto, etc. The release information for individual cities is surprisingly difficult to find online until about 5-10 days before it opens. I've missed a few films that had short runs here because I didn't look at the right time.
Another nice thing is production notes about presentation. Probably not too many people care, but I really like learning what formats will be presented it which theatres/cities. The Interstellar site, for example, had listing for theatres that would show it in 70mm film (which is a huge deal and extremely rare in N. America) as well as explaining why you might want to see the 70mm print.
This kind of site could cost next to nothing. Could be done with a free Wordpress theme, for all I care. I just want that info.
- You plan movie nights weeks in advance?********
- No, but if I hear about a movie opening in NY & LA, I have no idea when it's coming to my city. Sometimes they're only here for a week.nb
- a week. e.g.: Reggio's Visitors. Waited months to see it, it only played a week, I missed it!nb
- If I knew when it was coming, I'd have planned to see it and marked it in my calendar. So yeah, sometimes I do.nb
