So I've got an opportunity to work with someone who needs help with some of her projects from a developer standpoint. I'd love this to be an ongoing arrangement for the added income, but I'm not sure about whether I need a contract with her or not. Any thoughts on what I need to do to not get screwed?
Collaboration? Sounds more like a developer gig to me.
If she's paying you and you will have deadlines and deliverables, sign a contract. If she's hot and you are doing this for fun, a contract might be too formal.
If it's a no money deal out of the gate, do this in-kind, track your hours and work out a barter for the time. And put it in writing! If you don't value your time at the beginning, you'll never see a dime.
