Did a google search, seeing all kinds of crap for this. Is there a general best/easiest way to do this?

depends on how the swf is scripted... swf to mp4 is a ridiculous request to be honest

create a new flash, load the swf on it, and use the export movie to mp4

Kinda have a client itching for this. I cant tell them its a ridiculous request. Need to find out some options and whatnot. I dont know anything about this.
- It won't work if this is a swf loading an FLV. You'd need that file too.CyBrainX

Why can't you use screen capture software? There are dozens of options out there.

can you share the swf? is it just timeline animation?
If there's a touch of scripting in the swf then you're not going to get the same result... ... I really need more info to help!

This is an internal thing. Legal issue, cant send the file. I did a test with a Flash banner, looks like if its just a straight forward timeline animation, you can export to MOV which works great. It can be converted to MP4 from there obviously.
Buf if youve done things like jumping in and out of movie clips, you would need to screen capture it. Sound right?

^ Yup. spot on.
Was just about to write and tell you the same then saw you'd already typed it.

Gotta do this all the time for my reels.
Straight from Flash is the best. It DOES work with code-based stuff. However, you need to extend the record time duration in the export settings AND the main timeline to whatever length you want to record for (get rid of any stop actions on the last frame too.
However, if this doesn't work perfectly. There are a slew of apps that will do this. The ones for PC work the best but if you're on Mac here are the ones I use >
SWF Renderer (creates PNG sequences)
Swivel (your best free option)
Kurst SWF Render (free)...and the very best option, but it's only for PC and costs some loot, well worth it though.

In flash you can export as a video. It works better than it use to as long as there is no interaction. Make sure you set the time to capture to 15 seconds. Or however long your swf takes to complete.
