Which apple cable?

Apple change their connectivity so much I'm a little lost as to which cable I need. I have a monitor I'd like to connect to my late 2012 imac.
I think from a little googling that this is a mini thunderbolt port. It used to be a display port to vga I needed, then I had to spend another £40 on a mini-display port to vga. So I'm assuming I need a mini-thunderbolt to vga cable now, can anyone confirm?
Thanks

Use this. Pretty cheap.
- The port size/shape for Thunderbolt and Mini DisplayPort are the same. You can use the same old adapter.monospaced
- There is no "mini" thunderbolt, just one size, and you already have an adapter you noted above.monospaced
- Lol at pretty cheap. It's an absolute
ripoff. Can get a third party one for £2set - :)set

a minidisplay port works in a thunderbolt port. thunderbolt just has the added functionality of being able to transfer data too.
your mini display port to vga will still work.

Apple - making it so easy people still have to ask which cable - lol.

Step one, take it out of the box.
Step two, ask which cable.
Step three... there is no step three.
