I asked this in another thread, but the kind of jazz I really like is slower, rainy day trumpet and sax and bass. I like to imagine the right jazz like this for a rainy day in New York City in the 50s or something. Might be more blues based.
Now that I'm buying records left and right I'm really interested in getting some good jazz records, but I really don't want stuff that's faster and upbeat unless it has a good ambiance to it. I'm just not into too much upbeat music. Find me the jazz equivalent of Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, and I'll thank you profusely.

Pretty much anything by Cinematic Orchestra

Also, I highly recommend Dakota Suite. It's a bit melancholy but really good to listen to in the background. Not jazz, but it is instrumental.

on the instrumental kick I listen to ES Posthumous when writing. kinda movie score-ish but also great. cenematic orchestra, air, glitch mob, afro celt sound system, beats antique
on the jazz list I have:
a love supreme - coltrane
autumn leaves - adderly
Minuano (Six Eight) - metheney or Bob Curnow
snarky puppy (new huge jazz group search youtube)
