I need a new external to back up my computer.
My computer has 500GB, so I need around that same amount.
Any suggestions of brands or specific models?

Seagate have always been good to me, and cheap:

SSD is more expensive but more stable. Regular hard drives rarely last more than a few years. Also, you should get a bigger drive than that. You'll probably need to get another drive to hold things like work, music, photos and porn.

Buy 2. As soon as you gather all your files in one 'safe' place, Murphy will show up and kill that drive. Always backup in two places if you want to be sure. Oh... and stay away from WD. As stated above, Seagate has been the best bet so far. Go for a TB. Storage is cheaper than ever.

Ive had Seagates, WD's, LACIE's and an OCZ SSD all go bad.
You are screwed. For back ups I try to just use spinny drives and store them off line. The more they spin the more chance they have at failing. I dont like using external drives because if the firewire or USB bridge fails its really hard to get the data off the drive. Just use something like this http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-L…

I re-use my macsales.com cases usually. Then put my old SATAs, now SSDs, in a fireproof box in my closet. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/U…

i bought a Gdrive 1tb TB drive recently which I like a lot. if my old mbp had usb3 I would've got a usb3 version (cheaper) instead.

I bought a SeaGate GoFlex Wireless external and tried to sync it up with TimeMachine...Now my computer doesn't recognize the external..
So that pretty much sucks.

Can't find the other thread where I posted, but 2 of these is so far the best solution I've experienced... i.e. they haven't gone tits-up yet.
