My domain is expiring and Godaddy wants $16.99 + $9.99 for private registration PER year.
That seems like a lot for very little?
Who should I switch to? It's not a .com, so don't get it free with hosting.

why does it need to be private?

I think most people do private registration. I don't want my address in Google for some reason.
Also, some hosts offer it for free.
- if a host offers domain reg for free, sometimes they make it a pain to switch hosts in the future, beware if they may suckvaxorcist

namecheap offers that for part of the fee, which is like $10.99 / year for .coms, and their interface isn't constantly trying to trick you into clicking on extra stuff to pay for....

I've enjoyed https://www.hover.com/ . So far they haven't been dicks, and private registration is free.

Namescheap seems solid. They also tell you about namecheapcoupons.com.
Is there any downtime if I just switch domain registration?
I read that sometimes when you switch hosting, there is.

I pay $12 for renewals, with that being said I have noticed that the renewal pricing have been going up about .50 a year for the past 5 years or so.

GoDaddy has killed almost all promo codes for renewals. It's new orders only and their price keeps creeping up. If you can't get the cheap promos, there really is no reason left to deal with them. As mentioned above, Hover has been great so far.
