i have one... or two.
first off, how much does google analytics affect serp rankings? if the referrer of X number of requests shows google with the search terms 'toy boat', will i rank higher for those keywords over time?
also, how does compete.com get its data now? like alexa, it used to have a toolbar, but it doesn't seem to be distributed any more (esp. after their run-in with the FTC)? extra points if you can answer this question for comscore as well :)

Tactics? yeah I got ur final fantasy tactics. Enough already with the splitting of content across many pages, which in almost all cases is not done for the sake of good ux or storytelling. It could be tho, if done right.
Alas nigh, it's done this way tx to the head seo "guru" at a company, often self-appointed because 'they're good at the internet' blindly decides that page views and ad loads are more important than ux. See this thread: http://www.qbn.com/topics/684225…
And then that's it. they don't think it through, they don't get concerned about those awkward page transitions in the editorial itself; no custom copy for the online implementation. or even no transitions or logic at all, hey why not! just cut it like a cake and spread it and for-ged it! Get those numbers!
Because honestly, it's misunderstood smoke and magic to even those who practice that sort if evil seo sorcery. Hide ur children. the end.

@dbloc Iif attracting visitors from things like Google Images then its essential. The key to good image optimisation is descriptive-file-names.jpg, descriptive ALT attribute data and finally surrounding the image with relevant contextual text..

@SteveJobs Using Google Analytics doesn't affect your ranking in any way. Many people are panicking because Google have suggested they're going to use time on site and bounce rate to determine your popularity but Analytics isn't the way they'll do it. Instead they're using return to search.
Compete.com gets its data from purchase server logs. Its only a sample and not very accurate. If you want killer data like this use hitwize and be prepared to pay for it!

@prophetone not all SEOs are evil. The problem at the moment is there's been 12 months of turmoil so there's a lot of old tactics and misconceptions being thrown around. As my background is in web design and development i totally appreciate where you're coming from but throwing away traffic due to blindly banishing all SEO doesn't make sense.
- i'm one for balance and logic and there are transparent ways to approach seoprophetone
- my experience is dealing with those who don't even want to hear about ux implications as seo is kingprophetone
- just look at that forbes site. it's an seo-motivated cluster f*ck b/c they are clearly in an seo trance.prophetone
- but that being said, i of course promote good seo practices so long as ux is not compromised or ignored outrightprophetone
- i'm a design / dev / ux guy just in case you were wondering hahaprophetone
- Good UI/UX actually helps with internal pagerank flow so im all for ittrooperbill

@i_was I read some information a few months back saying some brands have doubled their sales from having a responsive mobile site design... that's simply amazing!
- trooperbill0
@_niko your sites down so no SEO for you ;)

Any more Q's?
- fadein110
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Odd one but have you had any experience of increasing traffic to Shopify sites? I know its just basically the same as any website but wondered if there is anything special required.
Thanks.- no problem. happy to dispel the myths and snakeoil stigmatismtrooperbill

@fadein11 its the same but more difficult if its hosted on the sub domain as all of your metrics are skewed by the root site
