Hey I just moved over to NYC from Australia where my hourly rate was AU$100, feel kinda like I'm starting all over again being here in NYC now. I've looked at all the posts about rates on here, online and checked out AIGA's 'salary survey' results but can't seem to figure out what I should be charging? I contacted a few studios before moving and got a stack of emails back asking for my rate and availability.
Any thoughts? I'm open to any advice, help and/or general hate.
I talked to Creative Circle, they told me I was asking way too high but then I looked up Creative Circle and found out I should probably stay away from them anyway.

Personally, Creative Circle must be coining it.
They charge us easily $70 per hour for people, who in my opinion aren't very good...
I'd love to see your stuff and I'll see if I can help...
- your email address didn't work but you can check some of my work on my website - http://labgraphik.co…shesh

$100 / hr is like 200K a year.

Lose that "Commissioned Portrait".
Honestly, if you're working in a studio, could you get more than $300 / day?
The internet has nothing but bad things to say about Creative Circle. Not sure anyone credible actually uses them.

I'd want $100 per hour if I was a freelancer.
The shit out there is outrageous...

Have you thought about going direct to clients? Then you won't be talking hourly rates, but project costs instead where you can make more money?

Don't really see any ILLUSTRATION?
- Good point! I actually never realised that till now. I post more of my illustrations on my Instagram - http://instagram.com… maybe I should drop the illustration out of my bio?shesh

Personally, I think NY fee blow anywhere else in the world away ten fold

Is it mainly agency work you're looking for then?
- shesh0
No not really, one of the main reasons I moved here is I was lucky enough to get some decent celebrity attention and scored some pretty big opportunities in regards to a fashion venture I'm working on. I have some ongoing design work from clients back in Australia I still work on from here but I want to get some experience and exposure working on some projects here in nyc so that's why I contacted a few design studios here about freelance work.
Ideally I would rather go direct to clients because that's how I was working back in Australia but it seems the way things are done here is reeally different to Australia so I thought working some freelance hours at a few studios would educate me.

As DP (doubt anyone here even knows what that is):
$1500-3500/day- Really? This gives me hope for the future!nb
- the 3.5k/d jobs come like 2x a year though, so most of the time you are around 1.5-2k mark.pr2
- No design job pays $400K unless you're a partner at the biggest firm or something.freedom
- and you're wrong, this is QBN, we all know what DP is:
Double Penetration :)_niko - no DP works more than like 6 days/month. It's not $400k but rather $150k.pr2
- DP = Director of Photography, usually for a TV ad or similar budget item, many meetings!
vaxorcist - in the film biz, there's a LOT of unpaid getting ready time & phone calls, etc before that day rate.vaxorcist
- This guy doesn't do TV commercials though.freedom

Are you a celebrity in Australia too? How the hell did you accumulate 26,352 followers on IG and only have 68 posts?
- shesh0
Ha what I meant was I got some attention from some celebrities, I'm pretty sure I'm not one!
So the answer to my question is, for me I should probably charge around $40 /hour?
I'm not too sure about IG? Maybe used right tags? I'm not an expert on it but I did notice my followers grew real quick when I first got on it and I was getting lots of comments and stuff. I always promoted it when I did live pieces, events or anything though. I started on twitter round the same time but didn't really happen the same way, I only got like 40 followers?!
- + I got tagged in a couple of posts by someone who had WAY more followers than meshesh
- akrok0
nylon said Creative Circle charge $70.
now they takes a bit cut of that.maybe you get upto $40 then.
but, why use them. cut them off is possible. take the whole cake.
- shesh0
Yeah I'm not using them, I contacted some studio's and got some replies back asking for my rates and availability so I thought I'd brave the dark waters of QBN to get some advice.

Talent agencies for design often charge almost double whatever rate they're paying you. So, if you find the clients yourself or work through design agencies directly, you can charge more.
