In folklore, Krampus was a devil-like figure who drove away evil spirits during the Christian holiday season.
Traditionally, he appeared alongside Santa around December 6, the feast of St. Nicholas, and the two are still part of festivities in many parts of central Europe.

"Krampus is a beast-like creature from the folklore of Alpine countries thought to punish children during the Yule season who had misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards well-behaved ones with gifts. Krampus is said to capture particularly naughty children in his sack and carry them away to his lair."

This happens near my place every year. Those guys are scary as hell. Back when I was a kid we always had a fun time hiding form them but once they almost got us, rattling with chains.
A few years ago it was more a day to scare kids and show off the costumes but I've seen that in the last years it got more and more violent, kids end up in hostpital and every time after 'those' newspapers are full of reports, looking for them. Shame.
