I always wondered. In cases like this, does money exchange hands? It's hard to tell who benefits more from the "collaboration".

Apparently the car sales have gone through the fucking roof since he did these...

In short yes money exchanges hands but it could include any number of other arrangements included in the deal. it can be complicated and involves ad companies and agencies who get paid. I don't know for sure but I am presuming that in the case of the Will Ferrel Anchorman ad the car company, I think its Ford, would of hired an ad firm who arranged for him to appear as the Anchorman because they felt it was a good combo. Its no different than pepsi hiring Micheal Jackson or whoever, they pay for him to be in the commercial but its mutually beneficial in the end, sells his records, sells the movie. It gets complicated because it could have been apart of a larger partnership where Ford trucks were placed in the Anchorman movies, they would have contributed money that went to the movie budget and Ferrel and whoever.

On the other hand the Harry Potter coke thing was likely Harry Potters marketing people who "reached out", as they say, to Coke to arrange something. They would of paid coke for placement on their product because of an over lapping target market. Again its complicated, it could of been apart of a larger mutually beneficial arrangement and money has to exchange hands because there are middlemen involved and people got to get paid.

    • In other words Coke would not have just put a HP ad on their cans for free just to sell more cans.uuuuuu
    • Also Will Ferrel and the Anchorman people wouldn't just do a Ford commercial for free just to sell more movie tickets.uuuuuu
    • ...tickets. Also Anchorman's marketing people are separate from Will Ferrels people so they'd have to get money for him... from Forduuuuuu
    • ...him (from Ford).uuuuuu
    • Thanks! I guess the individual who could make the most money is Ferrell.freedom
    • The Anchorman's producers wouldn't pay for Ferrel to appear in a Ford ad, Ford would.uuuuuu
    • probably yeahuuuuuu
    • He's got a cushy gig.uuuuuu
    • Yeah, I know Ford would pay him.freedom

    Regarding the Dodge/Anchorman commercial...
The car itself is not newsworthy. A TV spot with just the Dodge durango driving around does not call your attention.
But throw some window-dressing on it, in this case a celebrity, and it'll at least make people notice it. But it's hardly a collaboration. It literally could have been one of a thousand different celebrities, movie characters, bikini-clad chicks, etc.

    • and to answer your question about $, it's basically a shared marketing expense between Dodge and the movie studio.randommail
    • right its a shared expense, sums it up better than I did. And yeah dodge :/uuuuuu
