will you also be selling your art on the site? (in which case you might be looking for one of those ready-made platforms).
but what works for me is simple and clean... big artwork samples, quick to load and browse. a bio, maybe a blog section with process photos and news if you exhibit. i like to be able to subscribe to a feed/blog, etc. of artists and photographers i like to keep track of.

Q: are you looking for inspiring presentation, or inspiring art...
Oddly, many "amazing art portfolio" websites overshadow or walk all over the art itself, so I found myself drawn to simpler websites where you can see the art more clearly.... hence the "boring" artists websites may show off work more successfully....
